Played the Krank Rev combo yesterday

This was the combo. I honestly tried to be as objective as possible, even though I fucking hated the Krankenstein.

Honestly, it wasn't that bad. Had some fizz that was tough to dial out, and it sounded "cold" to me, not "tubey". Kinda like a really nice solid state, but still solid state. The biggest problem to me was the price. $1599, used. Are you kidding? It is not a $1599, even if it were new.

Tone's pretty subjective of course, and I can see the 5150 comparisons, though I found the 5150 to be a bit warmer sounding and more dynamic.

Sitting next to it was the real reason for my trip, the JSX. No question, the JSX absolutely slays the Krank in versatility and tone, for a lot less money.
Bottom line, not horrible, but not a very good value either. For that tone, the 6505 is a better sounding amp, and you'd still have a ton of money to send it to FJA to improve the cleans.

A guy in NY that does amp mods, and specializes in Peaveys. He improves the cleans on the 5150/6505 quite a bit, from the sound samples I've heard.

I don't know; if the Rev was a $1199 amp, it's be a decent deal for someone looking for that sound.

I just don't get why they have the sack to price it as such. Regardless of price, I certainly wouldn't buy one. But that comes down to personal taste.

figured that since I only been playing solidstate amps that I'd like a solidstate sounding tube amp

I guess they do! I will say they're not deserving of the hate, but also that they're (in my opinion) not a good value. For that kind of money, I expect to be blown away with features and tone. A Mesa Roadster is a great example of this, as is the JSX in its price point.

peavey 6505 combo sounds sweet, but it weighs in at 84lbs - caster me!

shatteredhourglass is on a distinguished road
I have the krank rev combo.......im returning it today. I cant get one sound out of it that i like, it feels more like a solid state than a tube amp. I had the store order in a 6505+ so thats what ill be getting. Not to mention the krank combo is not loud whatsoever, 6505+ can easily bury it at 10 o clock, when the krank is at 1 o clock. (other guitarist in the band has one, so thats how i did the volume test)

never played a combo, but the head i played exhibited the same characteristics.
Tones could be coaxed, but the mid contour button was TOO sensitive. The bass is a bit boomy (but could be remedied by an OD in front) and it is a bit shrill. With that said, the above features attribute to its lifelessness, IMO. They are tight, cutting amps, but if you want a good tube amp you need to stay away. if you want a great sounding SS tone with tube power, the kranks are it (but not for the price exactly )

Do you mean they sell a ton of shit amps at that price?

I played a Rev. Half stack, and a Krankenstein, the Rev. was pretty neat, I liked it actually, but there are amps at that price that do it better than Krank... And the Krankenstein just had WAY too much gain, and was much too fizzy.

They'd be better if the price was lower, but I don't think they should be prancing around pretending they make be-all-end-all amps.

You shake your ass but you're already dead.
