Best Guitar Strings....

Whoa! Long time no see guys! Haven't been on in almost a year because when I moved back into my apartment in NYC, and I didn't have enough room for my guitar :mecry: So, I didn't have it for a year.

Now that I have it again....

I've never changed the strings on my own on my guitar, so I wanted to know first hand from you guys... what's the best guitar strings for my babe: My baby! <3 ?

Is there something specific I should look for when I go buy them sometime this week? Type? Thickness? Length? The only thing I really know about guitar strings is that I hate those clear, plastic ones

Help a guitar n00b out :happysad: Even though I've had this guitar and have been playing for 8-9 years. Blah, pathetic I know!

I recommend pretty light strings for beginners - try something that says 'light' on the package, probably .10s or so. I usually use D'Addario strings, but everyone has their own preference. If you're not going to be changing them regularly, check out coated strings, perhaps Elixers. They have a plastic coating which keeps them from corroding - it also makes them feel really strange to some people, including me.

If you've never changed strings before, you might try to get someone experience to help. You can definately do it on your own, but it might go more smoothly with some help.

My father "was in a band" (aka. a little band when he was 16 who played "hard rock" in his garage and at the local Jewish Temple Saturday nights ), and he's had hundreds of guitars himself, so I'm having him show me how to put them on before I leave to go back to my apartment.

And I believe I had heavy's on before, actually. I had lights WAY back in the day on an old standard Fender electric, and I broke them all the time

Thanks - I had no idea they made strings that help with corroding - god knows my strings are rotting and smell like metal death They've also ruined the nice finish on the guitar's neck.

Yeah, I've been using Elixers and the D'addario equivalents (EXP's, I think) on and off for a while now. They work quite well, and sound fairly good, to boot.

+2 for Elixers. they didn't feel too terribly different for me. any difference i noticed was far shadowed by the fact that they sound great and have lasted me for months.

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

Anybody ever tried those stainless steel strings by D-addario I wonder how well those hold up

I heard that Dean Markley Blue Steels are actually really good. I think they're the only company that cryogenically freezes them. They supposedly are much stronger and last almost as long as Elixirs. Wouldn't mind some input from someone who's actually used them of course.

I use BS's on all of my electrics, but nothin' is quite as good as Elixirs on acoustics, IMHO.

And hiya, Sara.

Labrie will become famous soon enough
I only put blue steel's on all my guitars. I had Elixirs on one of my 7's once and I really liked them but I can never find any store that has my guage in stock so I stick with the blue steels. They're just more comfortable and last longer imo.
