My band's amp problem... advice needed

So the other guitarist in my band is in dire need of a new amp. His Crate Excalibur/Low end digitech pedal through his Ampeg cab is not cutting through the mix AT ALL. The drummer is loud and my 5150 kills. We did not expect much from his rig when he bought it and now he is looking to upgrade.

Problem is he, like the rest of us, is broke and is going through a divorce. Money is tight.

Basically, what he needs is something that is loud/cuts through well, can handle metal and has a good clean channel since he does all the clean stuff. He'd also like something with built in FX if possible but I keep telling him to stick with a basic amp setup and build on the FX from there.

I was thinking a Line 6 Flextone II HD head. I had one for years and I loved it, especially for detuned stuff. That would give him all the fx he wants. It would also be the most he could afford at this point especially if he got a floorboard for it.

Another choice I was considering was the Peavey XXL. We've never heard one but I figured maybe it was worth a shot depending on how well it cuts through.

Yet another choice is a tube poweramp and a GT-6 or Pod XTL. I can get a Carvin TS-100 (the older model) for a good price and I've owned both a GT-6 and an XTL before. I think that would work pretty well too.

Any advice?

After Simon bites that Skeleton’s face in half, he is going to rape that hydra. That’s how Simon rolls..

unfourtanly, like everything else, money talks with gear, i have an ampeg cab, the cab is actually nice, the speakers suck, i'm replacing them with swamp thangs, many of the ss memebers have recommended them for detuned metal, and they have 150 watts of power handleing each, when i pump 300 watts into my ampeg now, it only holds 200, and it gets loud as it will get at probably 150, then just gets more distorted, if you go with a much larger speaker, at 300 watts say, if your cab holds 600, then you will sound nice and clear and no enegery will be lost in translation, i have the same prob, i just joined a really good death metal band, and the other guitarist has one of those vader cabs, it blew my shit away, but with my speaker upgrades, i'l probably end up being louder than him, or at least clearer at the same volume

PODxt or Flextone II head.

I wish I hadn't gotten rid of mine.

7StringofAblicK-This is my footswitch. it changes channels on my amp - just like on a television, but I only have four channels.

Division - American metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on MySpace, and Soundclick, too.

i second this, my other guitar player uses an xt live and a bass poweramp, with a marshall cab, and it kills. i used to run an xt live and a cheap used peavey digital poweramp with a randall 4x12, and i loved it. recently i've swapped out the xtl for a gnx3000. i dont think i'll ever go back to a full stack type setup, other than possibly an HD147

For what you'll pay for a XT and a power amp or a Vetta II, you can buy a used 5150 head, which if set right will eat an XT alive in a live setting. It sort of makes sense, seeing as that's what the other dude in his band is using...

thats what i'm running, an xt live, to a strong power amp, to high wattage speakers, if you get enough power, and speakers that can handle it, i dont care how good a 5150 is, it will over power it,
