Advice needed...

ok...I'm thinking about ditiching my rack setup and just getting a decent head- I'm not a huge user of fx and I can't be dealing with all this midi programming crap...I just prefer to plug in and play...

I play power metal...blind guardian/iced earth/demons and wizards/helloween etc...

Guitars:

Schecter C7- Mahogany with JB/59
ESP M350-Mahogany with Distortion/Jazz
Jackson RR3- Alder with (soon) Ducan mustaine livewires
Moser V (Alder/maple neckthrough with (soon?) Mustaines)

Cab:

1960A

I want something with a clean/rhythm/lead setup...50-100 watts probably...ideas so far:

ENGL Screamer/Fireball (but doesn't this only have 2 channels)
Peavey6505/5150/XXX/JSX
Laney TT50/GL50
Marshall JVM/TSL60

I'm going to be selling an ENGL pre/power amp setup and a voodu valve, plus an Ibanez S370 to try and fund this...so hoping to have a budget of £700+ towards the head...

Thanks

Selling my Moser V (£500), ESP LTD H307 (£550) and Iron Maiden Strat(£900), check out the Guitars For Sale forum

Engl Blackmore would be great for power metal, very tight but natural sound. Very punchy. It has a very good clean channel, too.

I've been considering the Fireball myself.

Nick couldn't say enough good things about how it sounded.
It has got two channels but that's plenty really, especially if you want to simplify your set-up.

Why don't you like the Engl Pre/Power you have?
Surely you could get some wicked sounds from that rig?

I love 6505 to bits, but my real criticism is that it doesn't have a "clean setting" - the green channel is a bit dirty, even with the gain right down. Add active HB's to that and you are gonna get distortion.
The 6505+ has a clean channel with an extra "crunch" footswitch - so that, theoretically, could give you three-channel type operation.
Thay are £949 RRP however, and dont get the same discounts the 6505 does as it isn't as popular a seller.

I do like my rack setup...its a solid sounding set up, I just don't use any other rack stuff and I figured I might be better off getting a head...

...nothing is 100% decided yet, I'm just looking into my options!

(...plus, I'm a gear whore )

As Alpo suggested the Engl Blackmore would probably best for you imo. The channels are there and they sound great. And never forget: Engl is pretty much THE Voice for european power metal since most of the bands use them

thats what I was looking for, the sound of my rack, maybe with an extra footswitchable channel...in a head...

see, the main problem I have with my pre is that it is either clean or lead...it doesn't have other channels that can be accessed by footswitch...

? what ENGL-pre is that?

even the e530 (which is to my knowledge the "smallest" preamp currently in production from ENGL) has 2 channels plus 2 gain-levels which can easily give you a clean/rythm/lead setup typically just wondering

ah, I see

yea well, the Blackmore really seems like a good choice in this case. another option would be to replace your preamp with something like an e530 but that wouldnt really simplify the rig of course

hmmm, doesnt have the screamer 2 channels and 2 gain-levels, too? I'm not shure on that, but you can always check the manuals on the ENGL-homepage

the Fireball is certainly cool, but what I dont like about that amp is that it only has 1 gain-controll for the 2 channels. your decision if this bothers you or not
