Neal has a spectacular aura about
Question Tubes for Mesa

I've always been under the impression that you pretty much have to use Mesa tubes in Mesa amps since there's no bias adjustment. But I recently read something on here about using 'real' tubes instead of Mesa tubes. Has anybody done this and how well did it work? I loved what Groove Tubes did for my Marshall. I just didn't think they would work in a Mesa. If I could get more punch and low end out of my Road King, I might not have to get rid of it.

What power tubes do you have in your RK, 430's or 440's?

www.eurotubes.com - get a set of JJ's. all this "only use our tubes" is BS imo. tube brand doesnt mean much for me, its the tube type.

http://www.guitarists.net/forum/view...5&thread=69058 it gets discussed here.

First, grab a Tung Sol 12AX7 to put in V1. They're about $15 on Musician's Fiend. Throw a tube screamer in front of the amp, too. Throwing a tube screamer in front of a tube amp has become pretty much standard at this point.

so who wants to explain to me why you'd put a TS in front of a high gain head? isnt the point that it has high gain and massive crunch, so you DONT need to put anything in front of it? or did i miss something?

it seems to be the "in" thing, but im gonna stick with "if the amp cant cut it stock, its not worth getting".

You don't get any gain from it. You set the gain on zero, the tone to suit, and the level to match. It goes a long way towards tightening up and focusing the sound, making it pop out of the mix. I have yet to find a tube amp that this doesn't work wonders for.

i have a tube screamer. i set the tone and gain all the way down and the level all the way up. like a clean boost. i just use it for leads though. sounds like ass for rhythm stuff no matter how its set. cuts too much low end.

im glad no one's trying to squeeze more gain out of their amps, or i'd have a lot of ass-kicking and amp stealing to do.

i tried a ZW overdrive in front of my traynor with the gain set low and the tone set up, output on max - barely did squat for the amp. when i find someone with a TS, i will try this out.
