Tube Swap

So today i took out the EH EL34's from my JSX, and put in my sovtek 6L6's from my traynor.

damn. NOT what i expected. where'd that mad gain go on my crunch channel? where'd the whole "satch vibe" go? why is there less clarity on the crunch channel?

apparently the amp is supposed to sound BETTER with 6L6's, but i dont know. i did tweak my settings, and the jump between crunch and ultra is now just huge - i just wanted a lead tone similar to my rhythm tone, but with that added bite. now its a distinct jump.

what i find funny is that originally, i was like "I keep EQ'ing the distortion channels to sound the same, and it always has that satch vibe!"..now i sorta want that back. this tone may grow on me, we'll see. I need to record both tube types to see what i'll get when i retube the power section.

for everyone who owns a EL34/6L6 switchable amp, what do you prefer and why?

What type of 6L6's did you install, and how old are they?

Mine don't switch, but I own plenty of both. I like the EL34 sound better. It's got a little more high end and the response seems faster.

Have you biased the amp or just flipped a bias switch? You need to get the amp properly biased to get the true sound out of the tubes. My thoughts on swapping EL34's to 6L6's can be found here, but I prefer the 6L6's.

Sovtek makes great amps, but their tubes really suck . get some real tubes, like some JJ's. when shopping for tubes, don't be fooled by relabeled stuff. GrooveTubes, for example, are just relabeled Sovteks.

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

Could you recomend some JJ's for a Dual Rec? I went to their website and there's a ton of choices. Preamps, 6l6's and EL34's.

Thanks!

Call them and tell them what you're trying to achieve. They're extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

bob's a good salesman, thats for sure. i didnt have the amp biased, and as much as it may help i dont think that it was going to suddenly turn my JSX into a more rage-o-hol tone machine. i figured out what i wanted to, im stickin w/ the EL34's. when i retube i'll get JJ's. all in all, i dont really care what the brand is, i care that its the right type of tube :P.
