Thinking of selling my 4x12... (I already have a 2x12)
The only reason I've been keeping my orange 4x12 is for recording. I use my avatar 2x12 for practice and live. Would there even be a noticeable difference tone wise from close mic recording the two? They both have v30s and the avatar is modeled similarly to an orange 2x12? I could put the money from the orange to good use...

I'm sure there will be differences but if you can put the money to good use and you only use it for recording I say sell it.

Yes, cabinets sound different, even with the same speakers. You could mic both cabinets and A/B the tracks to decide. Also, at one point Orange exclusively used English Vintage 30s, which are considered superior to the Chinese version. All new cabinets, including Avatar, use Chinese Vintage 30s since the English factory now focuses on Heritage and some other models. So, depending on how old the Orange is, the speakers could be English, and some people consider them superior to the Chinese version. Just a though.
Just A/B them with a mic, that should answer the question. The difference might be subtle, and I'm certain others out there are wondering if the Orange-inspired Avatar cabinet sounds the same as the original. |

A lot will have to do with internal cabinet volume per speaker. For my own taste, i would take an oversized 2x12 over a 4x12 ALMOST every time, but it depends on what reacts to your guitar/amp/ears best. No question a 2x12 is easier to gig with.
Larger internal volume (for sealed back cabinets) yields better low end extension, while smaller internal volume yields better transient response (attack). The trick is to find the balance that best compliments your style of playing and the mechanical properties of the speakers in the cab. capeterson7x@gmail.com ![]() Custom tour ready speaker cabinets for instruments and live sound.
