Microkorg

Just picked up a cheap microkorg on a whim. I'm not much of a synth guy and I would have preferred something analog but I didn't want to spend very much. Anyone have one of these? What did I just get myself into? Hopefully I can make some spacey video gamey sounds.

If you want analog for cheap, look into the Korg Monotron series.

nice ya, im kinda rolling the dice cause if it doesnt sell, i can talk em down more prob 200 out the door, but if someone buys it i gotta wait 6-12 months for one to show up AGAIN. they are getting cheaper on the bay tho...

Yeah, the MicroKorg is pretty well regarded in terms of cheaper VA (Virtual Analog) synths. They are extremely popular.

+1, but for me, since I am just a hobbyist and don't play in a band, I was never able to justify spending money on a hardware synth. If you don't mind using your computer to play & make music, you could have more synth power than the Microkorg for free (aside from the price of hardware: computer + a $100 sound card or USB sound interface + midi controller). The number of high quality (legally) free software synthesizers is probably in the hundreds.

I recently got Komplete 8 for the same price as a new Microkorg. Komplete 8 comes with a plethora of musical tools, including Reaktor, Guitar Rig 5, Kontakt, Studio Drummer, and a ton more.

I've goofed around with one a lot and I love the platform. It's super intuitive, enough options to have fun with, not so many that you can't ever find that thing you were doing the other day but forgot to write down. With my giant fingers, I prefer full size keys, but even I could play some fairly complicated stuff on the MK and had lots of fun with it.

I have a Korg Karma, but would love to add one of these to the arsenal at some point.

Just got this in the mail and it is actually a microkorg xl. The description and picture on ebay were both of a regular microkorg though. I looked it up and the xl retails for $500, $100 more than the regular. Not bad considering I only paid $200.

look into it i think the xl might be digital dont quote me though.... might just have bigger keys....

I traded an old boss drum machine for a microkorg and it is quite entertaining. I enjoy the vocoder on there. I recorded some pretty out there stuff the first night I got it. Haven't used it in a while though, but will soon hopefully.

Both microkorgs are digital (they are analog modeling synths). The xl does have slightly bigger keys, but it also has a different engine and does a lot more stuff that the regular one.

and thats funny i know a guy in a local daft punk knockoff band who uses one and he says the vocoder sucks.

I've played with worse and harder to manipulate vocoders before. Nothing wrong with lo-fi. I love old even toy electronic instruments. Maybe that guy in the daft punkish band is more knowledgeable about high end keyboard stuff, but for the money the microkorg and it's vocoder are great.

We had this toy casio keyboard or something that you could sample things with. We'd belch or curse into it and it would be really fast or really slow depending on the key you hit. Hours and hours of entertainment. I wish I still had the thing.

nice ya i know for the money the synth is awesome! i still plan on getting one. ya those old keyboards that you see at garage sales and thrift stores some are sweet and some that are at thrift stores for 10$ sell for 60-70 online. people want that ANALOG sound back.

maybe. I'm no vodocer expert thats for sure. but I thought it worked /tracked really well and sounded cool .

Hmm, does anyone know if you can get spacey/atmospheric type sounds? What about like trumpet/sax type sounds?
