Octave and Fuzz pedals

So I'm working on planning my fall purchases, and I think the biggest gap in my toybox is an octave and fuzz pedal(s). I like to have things planned out so I can research, and if possible track down and try, a few things. For versatility I wouldn't care if both are on the same pedal as long as they can be engaged sepertely, but am looking more towards separate units so I don't have to compromise/settle for less than I want in either effect. So yeah, I'm looking for suggestions.

For fuzz, I am leaning towards something maybe darker. Been looking into Blackout's Dual Fuzz (one of the PGS exclusive versions) for the options it offers. Not set on it though, would love to hear opinions.

The octave pedal I would really like function in: up octave and down octave, sub octave would be a plus.

"what type of music?" That is a hard question, I'd say mainly metal and blues, but I like to mess around with ambient sounds and classic style rock.

"price range?" I'm not set on range, but $350 each would be a functional limit just because I'm planning to get a TightRock and want to keep my fall order under $1000.

You might try a MXR Blue Box, it does a little of both octave and fuzz, while being pretty cheap used. It sounds exactly like the solo on Led Zep's 'Fool In The Rain". Heck, its what Paige might have used for that.

You might check out any of Devi Ever's stuff for some crazy fuzz action too. Earthbound Audio just re-released The Supercollider too, which is doomy as .....

I second the Blue Box - Its my favorite noise makes and nothing else sounds like it.

Mmmmm... I'd go Blue Box ONLY as long as you realize that it's a noise box at heart and NOT a traditional fuzz. I have the old 'Cursive Script' version and it's good for hard-gated, glitchy stuff. Nintendo noises? You bet.

The blue box isn't even in the same category as the Twosome Dual Fuzz. I was actually tempted to buy that based on a) the demo on PGS and, b) the ....ing cool graphics. I ultimately ended up putting an order through for the Fuzzhugger Algal Bloom. My Blue Box doesn't sound at all like that thing!

Death By Audio also makes some cool pedals for stuff like that, like the Robot, and that Echo Dream pedal they have coming out.



Red Witch's Fuzz God and ZVex's Fuzz Factory can make some pretty crazy sounds too.

Any input on the octave side?

Been looking at the Pharaoh, and the price on the Slash means I could get a couple more toys. The Crystal Dagger with its fuzz/ring mod combo is kinda tantalizing too.

For Octave I would check out the POG and the Micro Pog. The Pog pedal is literally like a pedal with a 5 or so volume knobs. It goes from around 2 octaves sub to two octaves above and each channel has a volume control. It also has a few other fancy features, whereas the micro pog which is cheaper only has unity, sub and upper

I've liked the mxr blue box since I've heard Muse's MK-Ultra. I don't think it's a bit of a one-trick-pony tho.

Yeah, that looks like the one. Seriously cool sounds on that demo. PGS has a special edition version with more blending or something. Haven't really heard much about it though.

That particular one is either one fuzz or the other one at a time, The PGS version lets you turn both on at same time, iirc in series but you could change the order.

Aah i see! so that little switch in the middle controls which one the signal goes in first...

Personally i would like this one better.
And indeed with that option there are even more possibilities!
Do you know if these are even being sold?
(edit: its still on their website, so i guess i stuck after the "100 limited editions" )

im not sure, but it could be that the latter version has germanium transitors and the earlier germanium/silicon hybrids. could be wrong though.

The Very Special is a couple years old, and probably not available (new) anymore, the SS just came out. I would pre willing to pay a bit more if they added a parallel option on the direction toggle.
