Ick.... unless you are playing with a POD or something digital DO NOT buy a BBE man. I used one with a POD through a Mosvalve into a Mesa cab and it DID make THAT particular rig sound much better. I tried it out with a couple tube amps.... killed the sustain and good organic feeling you get from sweet, sweet tube amplification. All the feeling was gone. If you're going into a good setup, steer clear of the BBE stuff. If you are using a modeler, sure, they can be great. I would suggest what others have, go buy a tube screamer and try that. I just bought a Maxon OD808 from a friend so I hope to have some success with running that into the E'Rect module in my MOD50 for a bit more gainy/harmonic tone to it. I'll let you know how it works out for me, should be arriving tomorrow I believe!

I have a maxon rod 880. and a modded sd-1. so basically your saying just to do a clean boost with it right. also man i hate jj's to me IMO thye made it sound dark and dull. i hated the tung-sol for v1 i had better results with GT than jj's and the tungsol, i had the infamous tungsol jj high gain and chinese 9th gen. with matched p.i. tube and jj power section. i wasn't impressed. thats why i was considering a bbe

I think the thing everyone forgets about BBE gear, and I'm sure this is partly BBE's fault, is that it's originally designed to be applied to a mix and not a single instrument. As such, it's not necessarily doing anything to frequencies that would really be that beneficial to a guitarist - most of it's "correction" is in the bass and treble ranges, whereas the guitar is a very mid-heavy instrument and tweaking should probably happen there.

If BBE would take what they've learned about phase correction and mix sweetening, and apply it to a product designed from the ground up as a guitar sweetener, they'd probably have a pretty cool product on their hands. But as it is, I don't really see it being that helpful...

I own a BBE.

It works great in the bedroom, basically it's like a "loudness" button for your amp.

However, it sounds aweful in a live band setting. All it really ends up doing is taking the mids out of your sound, which makes your guitar get lost in the mix.

It's useful as a recording tool and to help your amp sound more full at low volumes, but it just doesn't do it in the real world.

i have some decent gear i use Diezel cabs, mesa dual rectifier heads, soldano slo clone preamps, a marshall jcm 800, a voodoo amps voodoohex. and marshall cabs and i have some kid 6 stringers as well. i mean i use the voodoo 50/50 cables, i have a decent rig, i play gigs regualrly at least ever weekend. what do you suggest then. it's just the boogie sounds good and all it's just bringing more of a scooped crunch to it it seems to me that it is a very low mid voiced amp. jeff loomis' tone on some older stuff was good and he used some bbe and uses them live as well. but tone is very subjective

and yea george is very fucking cool man very let me know maybe we could go there and hang out. george is a bad ass guitarist

Check out my gear dude. I'm Mesa through and through. And I mid-scoop my rig, but I do it with a Furman PQ4 parametric EQ. Anyone can atest to this, as I've always said that the BBE is an "EQ for Dummies" because I can get the same 'audio' effect with a para-EQ, and more. (Yes Drew, I understand what the BBE does and we've gone over this time and time again, let's not )

My rig is Nady Wireless/MXR Smart Gate/TriAxis/Rocktron Guitar Silencer/Furman PQ4/t.c. G-Force/Simul 2:90/Mesa 4x12 w/C90s. There's nothing 'amateur' about my rig, and not to come off like a dick, but I'm a major gear head and I know what I'm talking about here. The same result, from a sound standpoint, can be achieved with a parametric EQ. And they're a lot more versatile and flexible than the BBE.

Bottom line, you like it. Go ahead and use it. But from experience, the better your gear, the less likely you'll use one.

As for Jeff Loomis... he's a great player... but he plays on Krankensteins now, and PODs in the past... need I say more?

Nope. And he has (at least on recordings) one of the best metal rhythm tones around.

Yeah but those recordings are mixed with Mesas and/or Peaveys. Theyre not all Kranks or PODs. Not really relevant to the topic, but whatever

That's true.

I heard a band this weekend using a Krank. Man, did it sound like crap! It was nothing but bassy flub and fizzy harsh sizzle.

Yeah, don't get me started on those... I don't care how many free amps they sent me, I'd never endorse those guys (even if they made one that was actually decent like they do for endorsers).
