POD Alternatives
I'm looking for a piece of equipment that works the same as a Line 6 POD or an Axe-Fx. I've looked at POD's, and an Axe-FX is far too expensive (I'm looking to spend 300-400 dollars). Does anyone have any suggestions?

Either a Digitech RP1000 or GSP1101 would be the forerunners I'd say. Personally, I'd recommend the GSP1101 because it's a bit more versatile once you get the Mustbebeta update. You can usually find 'em used for around $300 or so.

I don't think these are any better or worse than my POD x3 or Axe Ultra.

Can't you find a POD HD500 used for that price?

there are many alternatives to the Pods but they're popular for a reason
Pod x3 r x3 Live is super nice if you want the super anal tweaking ability, the HD Bean is awesome |

For $300-$400 I would look at the POD HD or Digitech GSP1101.
Other alternatives would be the new Boss GT-100 or Zoom G5. |

I don't know about the Zoom G5. From the clips i've heard so far it still sounds like a Zoom (digital shit), esp. the high gain tones. Quality wise the tones weren't much better than my old Zoom G2.1u.

You would be very surprised by Johnson J-Station, even though the technology is "old" in comparison to whats' running around now. It sounds fantastic, and you grab them for less than 10 bucks on the used market. It has a much better feel than the older PODs, IMO.

Depending on how you plan on running it, if you use Pod Farm with a cab simulator like Re-Cab, I think you might get some fairly decent results. I know that when you use the GSP with it's stock cabs, it's not all that different from a Pod XT. I just traded in a few pedals today and picked up a Pod X3 bean, so there is much experimenting to come.
