Fryette Pittbul UL users

Hey guys,

I'm seriously looking at getting one of these and wanted to speak to a few people who already have one and have had other amps to compare it to.

I can't play one until mid year, but have been doing some research into it in the meantime.

I've read a fair few people say that the tone is very dry and has little saturation to it, meaning they can't really get any nice smooth lead tones from the amp.

I'm really into a thick and clear distortion sound that can do both dry and wet sounds.

Can you guys talk a little about the dryness, clarity of the amp and if you can get nice saturated wet smooth tones as well.

Keep in mind the reason I'm buying this amp is only through research and the sound that I am wanting is thick, clear distortion that is mainly dry but able to do saturated as well if need be.

I've also sold my mark 4 because as awesome as that amp is, I feel my time has come with it and I'm looking for something that has more tone and is more modern sounding.

Oh and Isis used them a bit so I'm thinking it's going to be an awesome choice!

Cheers

If you don't need multiple channels or a loop then you should look into the deliverance. It's super tight like the ul, but it is capable of getting more saturated. Now, when i say more saturated, i don't mean anything like a 5150 recto oor engl, it's still somewhat dry, but probably the most saturated any vht will get. It is weird though, my bandmates ul is actually more saturated than my sig x, when it's supposed to be the other way around; and he has no problem getting nice juicy lead tones out of it. Though, it should be worth noting that it is almost 20 years old and i have no idea what aging has done to its sound. Out of the top of the line high gain amps, i'd say the ul has the most clarity and is the most defined tone, but this can all be attributed to its dry character. An od could probably help give you some more saturation if need be, but definitely be weary of straight up boosting it, in my experience with vht and boost pedals the two dont get along too well.

Yeah I've got a 50CL, and I'd call it anything BUT thick. I've also got a DAR Tuzzia. But are very clear, articulate amps, but the Tuzzia is what I would constitute as thick. When people refer to thickness, they generally mean saturation, which Pittbulls don't have a lot of. That bein said, I LOVE the Pittbull tone. Just don't think thick. Punchy, clear, gritty, yes.

Also, +1 to the Deliverance suggestion.

I have an Ultra Lead and it's a great amp. It's a very clear amp across a wide frequency range, which leads to its "dry" reputation. It exposes all of the nuances of your playing, which scares some people away, but it rewards those that actually want that clarity. The KT88 power section has tons of headroom and when you crank it there's enough low end to make you feel like you are being kicked in the chest

I tend to lump amps into two categories: ones that require a bunch of tweaking and/or pedals to sounds good and ones that sound great no matter what the settings. To me, the Ultra Lead put a smile on my face the moment I plugged in.

To be fair, I also felt that way about my Fireball 100. As a comparison, I never really enjoyed the Carvin V3 I had no matter how I tweaked it. Granted, all of these amps are in difference price ranges which can be a factor.

I think leads sound great (it is the Ultra Lead after all ). The edge switch actually increases the gain for higher frequencies.

And as TRENCHLORD says, you can put a clean boost in front to saturate the preamp, if you prefer. But, it doesn't need a boost to riff your face off.

I have had 2 ULs (I posted a review in the Review Section here).... They are tight/dry/articulate/unsaturated. They work best for leads IMHO. The lack of saturation is most noticeable when playing chords ... especially heavy power chords. Will it be too dry for you??? Only one way to find out.

The UL is a great amp and one of the all-time great high gain channel switchers. The voicing is unique and nothing else sounds like it.

I also don't like the UL with a boost. It doesn't need it. A boost pedal only further compresses the tone and thins it out too much for my tastes. Not the same result as boost a Dual Recto for instance.

I Really need to play a Pittbull ultralead. Ive heard nothing but good things about it, even though i like a slightly compressed and saturated sound.
