DIY rehersal room soundproofing project (picstory)

We got tired of egg cardboards on the walls of our room which contribute to absolutely nothing, so we decided to take a try at soundproofing.We don`t have any problems with being to loud since our room is outside of a residential area, but with have issues with hearing ourselves when we play (and we don`t even play that loud; my 6505+ is at about 2,7 post gain)

The initial idea was just to build some bass traps for the corners

Well,just these four bass traps make a huge difference in the sound. The bass drum, and the snare don`t have that echo when you kick them anymore.

But that`s not the end of the project :-)

A week later we went shopping again, and bought these

and the same process repeated on the other walls

We didn`t test it yet because we worked trough the whole day yesterday til 23.00, but you can already hear the difference just by talking loudly in the room. No more echo, you have the feeling like the whole room is full.

We still have to do something about the window and the door, probably gonna make another panel filled with rock wool which can be easily removed.

Our main concern is the ceiling which is more than 3 meters high and we don`t what to do with that.


So any advice what should we do to further improve the tonal qualities of our room and/or criticism what is wrong with the current state is more than welcome

you could fit a false ceiling using the same method you have on the walls. you would just have to fix it to supports on the walls, also as swarming said if you can offset the ceiling to the floor that will help with standing waves. i would also suggest putting some sort of diffusion on different points on each of those walls, something like this:

my band has done something quite similar as the first traps that you built. For the ceiling we built a few bigger ones,
and fixed hooks in the ceiling so we could hang them up by chains.This allowed us to hang them at an angle from the ceiling,
and also easily adjustable if we want to angle them differently later

those are quite simple to make,
materials we used are wooden planks for the frames, rock wool for the insulation
fabric to wrap everything up, screws for the wood, staples for the fabric and some angled steel frames( I have no idea how they`re to called in english) connect the wood

step one, we made the square wooden frames which house the rockwool (you can see all that in some of the oics above :-) )
we put some extra planks at the back side of the frame to make it extra rigid

step two, put the rock wool in the frame (our dimensions are 2500 mm lenght 620mm wide and 100mm deep )

and final step, wrap everything in some sort of fabric (we used some micro fibres) and staple it

it costed us, less then 200 USD for the material and one afternoon of work including the BBQ break (can`t work on an empty stomach ;-) )

We`re thinking about doing the same thing about the ceiling, but we will have to put up some beams across because the ceiling is already made of knauf boards so it`s to weak to hang anything heavy on it

I think its all about sound reflection so if you stop the sound bouncing you soak up the noise like what you have done.

If it was me I would do something to the floor like a rug or mat to stop the sound bouncing to the ceiling.
If that works I would leave it at that and not bother with the ceiling.

You can also get a sound deadening paint which you can paint the ceiling...its like that bed liner stuff.

Ah, good call. I just assumed you had the same kind of concrete bunker that we started out with. we actually hung them all up by chains, so they are easily adjusted or removed as we want.

Well we all work/have worked in a field that is somehow connected to construction, so we have some skills and tools for the job ;-) ,plus we all enjoy this so its`t not hard to get together on weekends or whenever we have spare time and get some work done
