![]() Yes, they're very loud for their quoted output wattage. It's kind of academic though, any tube amp over 15W has the power to get very loud and anything over 30W is definitely capable of damaging your hearing. Volume is measured in dB on a logarythmic scale. It takes 10 times the power to be twice as loud, so a 100W amp is only twice as loud as a 10W amp, not 10 times as loud. Tube amps are generally louder than an equivalently rated solid state amp, but that's due to the different ways the amps clip the signal. Do you think I gave ou enough info there? ![]() |

The human ear percieves a +3db increase as being louder. From what I've researched, to achieve a +3db, you have to double the wattage or surface area.
So: 20W is +3db than 10W, 100W is +3db louder than 50W, etc. Also a 4x12 is +3db louder than a 2x12 at the same wattage. ![]() Metal... Nuff Said!! NEXT SHOW: Oct 3rd - IROCK Nightclub, Detroit MI Website: www.justdefymetal.com MySpace: myspace.com/justdefymetal |

All the science aside, I will say that yes, Mesas seem criminally underrated in terms of wattage. I never actually A/B'd them side by side since I sold one for the other, but I rreally think that my Nomad 45 2x12 combo (45 watts) was louder than the Marshall TSL-100 (120 watts) driving a Recto 2x12 (same speakers as the Nomad) it replaced. It's crazy.
Of course, the Nomad also sounds way better at bedroom volumes than the TSL did, too, so it's not necessarily a problem. ![]()

and it's not just wattage because of the design of the human ear differnt frequencys are preceived as having differnt volume so say if drews nomad when distorted produced lots of extra harmonic content in a particular frequency range and was EQed to enhance that it would sound louder than a marshall that didn't create alot of harmonics in that frequency range and wasn't EQed to enhance them

Some of it has to do with the way they design their master volumes too. They're so sensitive, it's not even funny.

i can say that my mesa poweramp is very loud. i usually run it at 15 watts and have never needed to go over 2.5-3. this is in practice and live situations. my metaltronix head with 2 tubes at 50 watts, is probably even louder than my mesa at full power, which is 85 watts. crazy loud.

I swear I must be in the loudest band here. I have to run my 2:90 at 1/2 volume on both sides to keep up with my lead guitarist's TriAmp at 1/2. And I'm running both channels into a 360w cab stereo. He's running one 5150 cab mono.

I have a peavey 5150 (120 watts) and a mesa dual rec
the mesa is wicked loud; IMO, sounds a lot louder than the peavey. |
