My current amp, a Laney TF100, is rough. It’s been sat in the loft for the last few years only getting used occasionally when I can be arsed to drag my gear upstairs to have blast. I’ve mainly been playing through my GT-8 with some headphones for since I lugged it up there, and before I got my GT-8 last year I was playing through a decrepit Zoom 505.

Basically I’ve not set a budget yet, but I’d be ok with spending £1000-£1500 if needs be to get a decent amp. I have a few questions before I go running off with a wad of cash.

I’m going to be using the amp for bedroom practice, and if all goes well in the next few months, in a band in practice rooms and gigs. Is there any benefit to having a head/cab setup over a combo? Is it worth saving money and buying second hand? How crappy is my TF100, or am I just a terrible guitarist?!?

Is my GT-8 going to be a factor in choosing an amp? I know its got preamp modelling, but how does that work with the real amp?

I’m a little clueless, having been a bedroom guitarist for so many years, I’ve not had much input from other people into these sort of things.

I play mainly metal/heavy rock stuff (metallica, Killswitch Engage, Iron maiden, etc). My guitar is a Ibanez K7.

Well with the GT8 you can do a 4 cable method to use the amps preamp as one of the sounds in your GT8. Toshiro does this so it might be worth PM-ing him about it. I'll also point you in the direction of this thread.
