Compressor Pedal Recommendations?
Hi all,
So my current setup consists of a Maxon OD808> MXR 135 Smart Gate> through the front of my Triple Rectifier. I play tech death, so I was thinking about adding a compressor to focus my sound and make it punchier. One of my friends recommended Keeley's 4-knob compressor. Any recommendations would be great! On a side note, I was wondering if I would be better off getting the ISP Decimator pedal to replace my MXR 135 Smart Gate? I hear they are supposed to be good? Thanks!

Has anyone tried the MXR Custom Comp? I've been very curious about that one compared to the Keeley's.
I have the Boss Comp... and yeah, kinda blah. |

I would still go keeley because with distortion, an MXR custom comp will make a lot of noise as oppose to a keeley.

Yep, the Keeley is pretty damn good. And so is the ISP. You might keep the MXR to use with the ISP if you get one for the ultimate in noise stoppage.

Periphery used to do this before the days of the axe-fx. they used it like this: guitar->compressor->noise gate->overdrive->noise gate->amp |

I had a pigtronix philsophers tone, amazing compressor and adds tons of sustain, being optical its not as noisy as analog ones

If you don't have much money the Biyang CO-8 is VERY good, borderline Keeley good with even less noise. Check the review here : Biyang CO-8

I'd make sure you et an optical compressor rather than a VCA compressor. The latter (voltage controlled amplifier) are very noisy and in a setup like yours will be a nightmare.
Optical compressors include the aforementioned Keeley and the Maxon CP101. I wouldn't bother with the 4 knob Keeley as it's identical to the 2 knob, the 2 knob just has the extra two knobs internally. The Maxon is excellent and a cheaper alternative. Also, when you get it, put the compressor before the gate and the drive after. I would say a compressor won't add focus necessarily, they're just as prone to cutting highs and attack and boosting low end, detracting from focus, it depends on the situation. The trick is not letting it only having 2 knobs (for the comp) fool you I think. I mean Keeley has 4 knobs, so it is like, 2 knobs better, right? RIGHT!?
