![]() | Sanding off a finish - what grit sandpaper? May be a stupid question but... what grit sandpaper should I use to sand off the finish on my AX7221? I'm planning on sanding it down to get a wood finish and using tung oil for a coat. Will I need to coat it with anything else after the tung oil? I'm planning on selling this guitar but so far people seem to not be buying these and EBay has people selling them for $100 or less. Mine has a Duncan JB-7 and I'm planning on adding a '59 in the neck and doing the finish job to make it more attractive for sale. Rev. ![]() |

![]() | from what i have learned or read, you can use a very high grit sandpaper. somewhere around 800 to 1000. you don't have to put another coating on it but oil, dirt and sweat will get on the wood and could cause some discoloration or something. maybe a flat finish clear coat of some sort could help. good luck with it though. ![]() ![]() | Use a high grit at first, like 60 or around there to just get the finish off. Then start moving up to like 100, 300, and so on. End with like 600 and then finish it off with 0000 grade steel wool to make it super smooth. You then add about 10 or so coats of tung oil. I would personally like to use 10-15 coats because at that point, it starts to feel somewhat like a satin finish. You will need to use steel wool after the final coat of tung oil because tung oil is sticky feeling. The steel wool will make it feel super smooth. Good luck! |

![]() | DO NOT SAND THAT FINISH OFF.. Those are not solid pieces of mahogany and you may make it uglier than better. Case in point my S470 although I planned on reshooting a solid finish has a 4 piece body. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Having stripped a few guitars, let me say that factory finishes do NOT like to come off. Use something coarse until you start to see primer - it's way more work than it looks like it will be ![]() Also, as ibanezcollector said, if this is just for a sale, you may end up decreasing the value rather than increasing it. |

I stripped my old RG220, only to find out that the body was some kind of fucked up composite, it wasn't even wood. I ended up throwing it away and selling the neck for $50 since it wasa 24 fret AANJ. :: chrisquigley.com :: Sevenstring Registry :: Share Your Music :: Share Your Patches :: Sevenstring.org MySpace chmod +ax /bin/laden |
