Powerblock-->1960A Ohmage question

OK, powerblock has 8ohm mono (150 watt) and 4ohm stereo (75 watt) outputs, 1960A cab has 16 and 4 ohm mono inputs and 8ohm stereo inputs...wtf do I do?

As a general rule, you can raise the impedance as you go down the chain, but not lower it. So, 8ohm amp-->8ohm powerblock-->16ohm cab should be fine, 8ohm amp-->8ohm powerblock-->4ohm cab will eventually fry your amp's output transformer.

PODxt-->Crate Powerblock-->1960A, so I'm running into the 16 ohm mono socket?

Oh, the Crate Powerblock amp. Sorry, I was thinking of the Marshall Powerbrake. Not enough caffeine this morning...

The PODxt is not an amp, so it is irrelevant to your question. Since your cab doesn't have the proper impedance, err on the side of caution by always going up. You could use the 16ohm mono or 8ohm stereo jacks, and be fine in both cases. No real need to run stereo, though.

haha thats cool, I realised when you said it I probably shoulda put something to stop it sounding like a powerbrake, so yea, 16 ohms it is?

OR

should I be running the 8ohm stereo and just using half...I'm more worried about £400 worth of cab than £100 worth of poweramp, but I'd kinda like both to keep working

Solid state wise, as long as the cab is higher impedance than the setting of the power amp or equal, then it's OK.

With tubes you do ideally need to impedance matchm, can't quite remember why.

Connecting a lower impedance speaker to the amp will fry the amp.

Connecting matched impedance will ensure the maximum power transfer.

thanks! This is pretty much my practice rig anyway, so I reckon I'll find a 2x12 that'll match it...

why not use the setup in stereo. the powerblock is stereo and so is the cab.

The 4ohm stereo outs of the powerblock would be fine into the 8ohm stereo ins of the cab.

As long as the power amps ohms are equal or lower, you'll be fine.
