Thanks guys.

I've decided to go with a Peavey JSX head and a Mesa Boogie 2x12 Rectifier cab with V30s.

Thanks again, your input was extremely valuable.

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

When's the last time you compared a Mesa pre to a Marshall?

Update:

Hi guys,

I plan on purchasing the amp this Friday (Nov.10/06), however I think my game plan has changed a bit.

I'm now considering the JSX 2x12 combo. I hear they're great and portable, and then picking up a used Marshall 1960 4x12 straight cab (they're very common and cheap).

The JSX combo is much cheaper than buying the head and a 2x12 cab and the weight/size should be fine for the amount that I'll need to transport it.

I'm going to see if this is fine when playing with a band, and if not, I'll purchase the used 4x12 at that point, and leave it at the drummer's house.

What do you think?

Or you could get a 212 cab. (plus the combo). Whatever works for ya!

Just one more question...

The JSX combo is open-backed. Can you still get a good "Metallica" type heavy chug out of this combo?

I guess my options are:

1) Buy the combo
2) Buy the combo and a 4x12 cab
3) Buy the Head and 4x12, and a 1x12 for portability (the 4x12 would stay at the drummer's house)

What do ya think guys?

At the end of the day I'd like something that is somewhat portable and still able to produce great Dream Theatre/Metallica/etc type tones.

Thanks again!

i dunno man ... the more you say you want Dream Theatre/Metallica tone, the more i think you really should try this amp out before plunking down the $$$ ... do i think the jsx is brutal and perfectly capable of providing great metal tones ... yes ... but does it sound like a mesa ... no.

I had a 5150 combo for a while. It was so god damned heavy I'd rather have had either a halfstack or head / 2x12 cab. Just a thought.
