Splawn Nitro or Mesa/Boogie Roadster?
im eventually looking into probably going into debt by taking out another student loan and getting a second head, i already own a Peavey 5150II and i love this damn thing even after playing Engl's, VHT's, etc.
I played a Roadster the other day and it sounds great (it especially screams when boosted), it has a lot of balls and cuts decently, i like the overall sound of it. ive never played a Nitro but i keep hearing its a 5150 on steroids and my favorite band is apparently using it (Killswitch Engage), i think they used it on tour the year they were on the Mayhem fest, which if they did it sounded godly live... what do you guys think of either amp? I play in Unearth/Killswitch Engage/Suffocation/The Black Dahlia Murder kinda band and im looking for the best kind of amp that will just crush people's lungs when i play live...yeah thats unnecessary but true

Do you require a amp to have more than one sound?
A more specific question is, do you use more than 2 channels for the music that you play? If you don't, stick with the 5150. Don't go in debt for a impulse buy. Save your pennies and gain more gear real estate. |

I'd say the Splawn is more of a hod rodded Marshall JCM800 than a 5150. I prefer the Roadster for the options and versatility.

My Roadster at 50 watts is louder than most 100 watt amps. My roadster destroys my buddy's marshall. Plus mesa boogie is only an hour drive from my place! You can actually go there and have your amp serviced.

I agree with not going into debt for another head impulsively, but between the two- I'd go with the Mesa/Boogie as well. More versatile (as mentioned) and brings more to the table.

I got a roadking II a few months ago, seriously, it makes my modded 5150 sound very much like a one trick pony, it covers everything, is ridiculously tweakable, has a tight bottom end, does rectifier better than a rectifier, in short, insanely good amp. The roadster I believe is pretty much the same but without the power amp and cab switching, in any case, if it's anything like it's moe tricked out brother I'd say go for it. Mesas do have a particular sound though, but if you love it, then great
![]() If you are going to throw down a substantial amount, then go for an amp that will last and can cover a lot of ground

its not an impluse buy, ive been pondering this for months now but my only gripe is that ive never played a nitro but ive played the Roadster
i'm happy with my 5150II, it sounds monstrous even without an EQ pedal. but since im looking to play tons of shows and probably do a small tour in the near future i want to have a backup head or just another head to get a tone boner from. Get the roadster, The 50 watt feature is great for small shows. 4 channels too, and aren't they the same price?
Channel 2 on the roadster has this brit switch marshallesque tone. lol |

roadster, cause the splawn isn't very good,
or it was the year i had, the resonance didn't do anything, it was lame, someone told me it was the year that that nitro was made that the company decided to lower the responsiveness of the resonance, which sucks in my opinion, 2010 or something idk but the roadster has many options, (a drrr) so get it if not the roadster spend a little more and get a DAR 100h, and it will really kick bye now! |

If you need to take out a LOAN to buy GEAR, don't buy it.
I dunno what I'd choose. I'd want to sit down with both of them. |

This.
Taking out a loan to buy gear isn't a good idea, I'd save loans for something that is truly important. Gear will come and go, but bad credit is a bitch to fix... trust me.. its a student loan so i have a long time till i need to pay it back. i may not need to do it since my financial aid money i get is usually a good chunk of cash anyway.
im leaning toward the Roadster though... "Si vis pacem, para bellum- if you want peace, prepare for war." -The Punisher My Band http://www.facebook.com/echoesofanightmare Me |
