Decent Distortion Sound?

Im in the process of upgrading from my Spider II, Probably going fo the Peavey Valveking, but what sort of distortion pedal do you think would complement it well to replace the built in spider effects.. Basically has to have a tight low end, wanting a Train of Thought style sound if that helps... Without having to spend big £££ on Mesas

Any Ideas?

Forget the Valveking (a bit more of a vintage voicing IIRC) and go for a XXX. If you want Mesa-like grind, it's as close as you're likely to get.

try looking for a peavey ultra plus maybe? about the same price as a vavleking (or less). if you find one of these used you'll forget about distortion pedals.

might i suggest a 5150 combo? you can get them used for 500-800$. They're pretty awesome for metal

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

Ok, I didn't know how XXX's priced relative to the ValveKing. In that case, the (now discontinued) Ultra Plus or a used 5150 combo are great options. In particular, I've heard of Ultra Plus heads going for $300 or less, and it's essentially the amp the XXX was based upon.

Is it just a good distortion you're after or do you want a clean channel too? Budget?

Clean is not so important, obviously it still needs to be useable but nothing special, Budget is about £400. Doesnt have to be too loud, my Spider II is 75watts and thats more than enough, Hope that helps thanks.
