Desired tone?
Style of music?
Gig, home, or both?

Ask enough questions, and you can answer anything.

Peavey 5150(used), Peavey 6505(or both plus models), with a noise gate(ISP Decimator, Boss Noise Suppressor and a booster(Ibanez or Maxon tube screamer ts-9 or 808, OCD Full tone), your set. Also Peavey heads are very well priced.

Marshall 8100. Get an overdrive, NS-2, and you're set. Extremely versatile amps, and can be had for very cheap on the 'bay. They usually go for 250-350. Worth every penny.

Peavey XXL! I love mine! You can find used ones all over the place for cheap for like $200-300.
I got mine at GC for $199 w/ footswitch.
It's also extremely versatile. I play a lot of genres on it.
4, 8, 16 ohms, 100 watts, 3 channels with 3 settings per channel.

Bro, you need to tell us stuff like this in the OP

I'm sure you can find either the Peavey or the Marshall if you look hard enough.

That's a bit random, lol, how did you know he wasn't in a Buddy Holly covers band?

Just kidding man

OP, do you have any favourite bands or tones?
I personally thought the Peavey XXL was discontinued...

The XXL IS discontinued, has been for a couple of years. Still dirt cheap in North america (they were $800 new IIRC)

Don't buy them, they're good-for-the-money, but you don't want good-for-the-money, you want good.

Nah...

If you have 300 quid to spend, you won't get a 6505/5150, they've shot up in value through various weird circumstances.
Basically:
nobody has any money
this includes amp/guitar makers therefore
the prices go up therefore
nobody buys new amps therefore
everybody buys used amps
the 5150 is the most popular used amp and is known for being cheap
more people want them because of the first reason therefore
they're worth more

Supply and demand.

If there's no reserve, you can still find JSX's or XXX's going for 400 odd, unfortunately a lot of owners think that because the used value of a 6505 has gone up, so have the JSX and XXX, so there tend to be a few with a 700 price tag on them that never sell. It sucks, but they just don't hold the same value, and they are genuinely good amps.

Therefore my answer; save until until you can get something you want rather than something you can afford. You never know, you might get a stroke of luck and come into some money and be able to afford a decent amp.

Bizarre really, 3 or 4 years ago you could pick up a beat up 5150 for 400 easily, now you're looking at more like 550+

Peavey 6505+ 112 combo. They run about half the price of the heads new(can be found used for even cheaper on EBay I'm sure) but have the same 5150/6505 tone, just in a smaller package. Can also be easily hooked up to an external cab

get a cheap marshall head with decent gain and boost it with a gain boost/fuzz pedal(personally the Boss FZ-2 gives an almost tube like tone and adds a certain grit)
and a Boss NS-2 and that should cover ya bro
or the Peavey XXL and a noise suppressor

Seeing as you're British, do yourself a favour and check out some British amps! Check out both Laney and Blackstar, they're both extremely well priced over here.

For Sale: Laney VH100R - £400 [UK] PM for details.
