And I'm happy to say that it performed admirably.
![]() Yesterday I finally got the chance to set up out at my folks house in the country. I can jam at my apartment with my electronic drums and PODxt, but a close friend of mine has a few thousand dollars invested in his drum set and we've been itching to set up somewhere and really push some air. Once I got my 4x12 all the puzzle pieces were in place for a guitar/drum jam. So we hauled all that heavy gear out to my folks place and set up on their porch. Forgot one of the tom mounts so we couldn't mount up the smallest tom (it's an 8") and we just rocked it as a five piece. It's a Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage, which is about in the middle of their line. He got Yamaha's best double bass pedal and really good hardware. He also got some really superb cymbals; the hihats are Sabian AAX Fusions, and the two crashes and the ride are Sabian Hand Hammered. That was all he could afford thus far, a china and splash and anything else will have to come later. We left the bottom heads off the toms for the time being, we didn't want to spend hours tuning the set (the drums had been nested inside each other in storage). Here's a pic I snapped really quick, it's a nice emerald green color. ![]() Lovely sounding set, those hand hammered cymbals respond amazingly well to the subtlest touch. The toms, being smaller fusion type toms rather than the bigger rock toms, are not quite as big sounding as other sets but they are incredibly punchy and cut through. To be perfectly honest, I was worried about whether or not the power amp I have would be enough. It's a Carvin DCM150, and with the way I have the cab wired up it would only be supplying about 70 watts to three of the speakers and 50 to the fourth one. So I set up everything out there, and once the drum set was ready to go I set to dialing in some sounds. All I had done previously was take some of my sounds I already use on the PODxt direct and disable the cab models on them. Once cranked of course I had to adjust, but all I had to do was roll of quite a bit of bass and a little bit of treble, and even then only on some of the patches. My clean sound I usually use was perfect through the cab with no tweaking. And to my delight, the power amp provided enough volume to do the job splendidly. The Eminence Legend M12's in particular are very efficient speakers, which helps. I never had the volume on the channel powering the three Eminence drivers over half, and the volume on the channel powering the Celestion was at about a third (you can see the settings in the pics). This was enough for the drummer to comment "it's certainly enough to kick me in the head". And he's a pretty heavy hitter. I'm paranoid about blowing speakers and such, so I was always checking and listening and scrutinizing to see if I was pushing them too hard. No flub, no crackle, no buzz, just tight ballsy sound loud enough to keep up with a powerful drummer on a quality drum set. And it handled the low A just fine, and sounded great the entire time. So now my official rig consists of: Schecter 007 Blackjack>PODxt w/ FBV Express footcontroller>Carvin DCM150 power amp>Sonic 4x12 w/ three Eminence Legend M12's and one Celestion G12H-80. Decent cheap rig that works great for this po' boy. ![]() We'll be jamming through Monday when we'll have to tear everything down until the next time we can arrange enough time to make setting up again worth it. I'm loving every minute of it, and I'm just pleased as punch with the rig. Nothing like cranking a 4x12, I swear it's therapeutic. ![]() |
