My first re-tolex project - 6505+
Here it is...
![]() ![]() ![]() I love white. It's going to match the Splawn Quick Rod I ordered.I may have to start doing this in my spare time to supplement my income. It was suprisingly easy, but then I've done alot of stuff similar to this before on my old show truck.I've still gotta take this thing in to a tech and have it checked out. I put new tubes in it, but it didn't fix the noise and EQ problem I'm having. |

Looks nice; I had painted mine last year when I wanted it white but it looks like crap now.
What did materials cost you? I'm itching to retolex mine as well. |

Thanks guys.
I ordered the tolex from Antique Electronic Supply . Technically, it only takes 1 yard to recover it, but then you'd have 2 seams...which is guess isn't that bad because they'd be on the bottom. Since the tolex was only $12.95/yard, I ordered 2 yards that way I would have enough lenght to go all the way around the head and only have 1 seam. You're left with ALOT extra...enough to do 2 more heads. For glue, I used the 3M Super 77 spray. The 77 sufficed, but I'd recommend using the Super 90 because it's a little stronger. Either one is a little over $10. I spent about $40 recovering it...plus the new corner covers, screws, and handle. |

I'm sure it could be done, but it would be hard to pull it off.

That is excellent - any tips on how to make a good job if anyone were interested in doing that themselves?
There's a DPM (Camoflague) covered Laney head+Cab in my local music shop that is also inspirational so I'm tempted to have a go at some point
While raping a bear in Yellowstone and snorting coke out of a freshly-dead baby's skull, I finally felt that I had found my calling and built a time machine out of Iraqi WMDs and LOTS OF HEMP WHOA. Using this time machine I went back in time and shot JFK from outer ....ing space. The hardest part of the whole process is getting the old stuff off. It's a pain in the butt. The stuff that Peavey used to glue the tolex on was killer! In alot of places, the cloth backing would separate from the vinyl, and it's about impossible to peel it off. I ended up using my power sander to get it off...it was alot easier and faster that way.
As far as the recovering process...just pay attention to how the old stuff was wrapped around. I found a how-to where someone said to lay the old tolex over the new and trace the pattern. That's a waste of time really. I just cut mine to the proper width, plus 1/4 to 1/2" more. I started on the bottom and worked my way around. The seam was the only place that I was nervous about, and it wasn't really that difficult. You overlap the ends and then use a razor and cut a straight line. Then gently peel up the overlapping end and pull the piece you cut off the other end out from under it. Then just stick it back down... When wrapping around the corners and edges, just cut off a little at a time until it will lay and overlap right. |

Good job, i re-tolexed both of my heads and its a pain in the ass getting the old stuff off like he said.
As he said get 2 yards, 2 yards did my 2 heads and my pedal board. The corners are a real pain in the ass if you want them perfect, mine all have a 1/16th of a gap bit they got alot better as i went |

That's my signature sound...
![]() ![]() ![]() JK...I was messing around and put everything at 5 except the posts at 0. I thought it would look funny for the pic. I've gotta take this thing in to have it fixed. The EQ on the lead channel doesn't seem to work, and it's pretty noisey. Hopefully it's not a major deal... |

Antique Electronic Supply
If you order the corners from them, make sure they wrap them individually. When I ordered them, they were all in a bag together and scratched a little. Being the perfectionist I am, I had to repaint them. |

Badass! Ever since I was much younger and saw Randy Rhoads' Marshalls, I've been in love with white heads and cabs. I definitely want to do this when I'm more steady in my head department (read: when the Mesa is departed).
