Saving up for a new amp.
So im embarking on the saving up process for a new amp set up.
Im looking into a few amps right now. The 6505+, ENGL powerball, and Framus cobra. Im looking for a sound that is on the likes of nevermore and killswitch sounding. I need to have a great clean channel and a insane distortion sound. What should i all get. Im sure id need a noise gate, compressor, and all that jazz. Im not much on amp gear, ive never embarked on a full on set up and i think its time. any help would be great. I also seen that alot of people plug a pod xt into there amps for clean sounds... how does this work? how do you switch from the podxt and the distortion of the amp? sorry for all the questions, and i would search but for some reason the search function doesnt like me. LOL |

The people above aren't really understanding what you're looking for. In terms of the sound you're going for, an ENGL would be a big mistake. Killswitch and Nevermore is more of a Peavey/Mesa type sound. The 6505+/5150 II is cool, it's a little too smooth though IMO, not really that aggressive sounding compared to the 5150. Framus Cobra would be a great way to go. A Mesa or VHT amp would suit you well too I think. ENGLs are cool but the midrange character you're going for won't be found there.
You don't need a compressor. Noise gate and tube screamer is all you'll need. Summary: Framus Cobra, Peavey 5150, Mesa Dual Rectifier, VHT Pittbull, etc. |

the last killswitch record was made with a 6505 and framus dragon, so i vote for either of those.
what framus head do you have now?

I heard the last killswitch CD was a Soldano?
![]() Fuck I dunno lol They are definitely not Engl tones, even though Jeff Loomis is now using them. You will notice a difference in his sound.

I vote the Framus Cobra. From the clips I've heard it's similar to a 5150, only I think it sounds better. Plus I think the cleans sound amazing too. It's a highly versital amp so you could deffinately find your sound with it.
It's what I have my heart set on. Ibenzorange should back me up

framus cobra is AMAZING. amp of choice. straight up. MAYBE a brunetti, but that cobra... mmmmmm
no clipz, but it is SUPER tight, From what ive heard it does well with the darker mesa tubes

Jeff Loomis has used just about every amp under the sun through the years (Dual Recs, XXX, Krank, ENGL, Line 6...), i think it's safe to say that with the right tweaking, any modern hi gain head should get you close.
i would recommend a Brunetti Pirata or Brunetti XLII R-Evo or a VHT Pittbull UL/ CLX/ CL as i think they smoke all the amps you mentioned, but these have a distinct voice and feel that might not be for everyone. |

yeah, Brunetti is not cheap... mainly has to do with them not having any (at least i think they don't have any
) US distribution, so they're a little pricy to get over here new. they do pop up on ebay every now and then, i got my Pirata 141 used on ebay in dead mint condition for $1599, and ive seen a few XLII R-Evos go for around $2000. so they can be had for a decent price if you're patient.
