Hiding a terrible inlay.
So i found a guitar i would really like to use as my main live 6 string axe
This guitar: Ibanez :: Electric Guitars :: MTM - Mick Thomson : MTM1 The ibanez MTM1, i love everything about this guitar, its plays and sounds great, it has my favorite bridge system (the fixed edge with a locking nut, so its a locking hardtail with fine tuners!!) and its one of the few guitars that sounds really good with the emgs it has in it. I even love the color, and i can get a good price on one as well! The problem is that stupid "Seven" inlay, and i was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on ways i could hide/get rid of it for cheap/free so that i can buy this guitar haha! Thanks dudes!

I'd imagine you could probably get a luthier to take them out and inlay rosewood in its place- not sure how much it'd cost, though.

Personally I would save the money and get an MTM-2 with upgraded pickups of your choice
![]() Ibanez :: Electric Guitars :: MTM - Mick Thomson : MTM2 Something else putting off the cheaper version?

I find it very ironic to be a 7 stringer and buy a 6 string with the word Seven written all over your first five frets.
Anyway, what Ozzy said. Even though I like the inlay. |

the problem is that would be really expensive, i was thinking about just putting some tape over it or something, would that make it sound terrible/fuck things up?

You could buy the guitar, sell the neck, and have a new one made by any of the capable luthiers around. Or you could follow the fretboard replacement guide on projectguitar.com, strip that rosewood piece off there, and then put on a new ebony piece with bigger frets. Tape would wear out I think but might work, just throw a bunch of loops of electrical tape on there.
err never mind the new neck thing I forgot that one was neckthrough. Now I kind of want one ahaha

The MTM-1 is neck-through and the MTM-2 isn't, so I wouldn't say that be such a great solution.

yeah electrical tape was what i was originally thinking, i just didnt know if it would affect the tone adversely/be bad for the guitar or not.

I don't see it affecting the tone too much, but I don't know how long it would last. I think your only other option is sending it to a luthier and getting them to remove it and inlay rosewood like OzzyC said.
If you don't like the inlay but you like how that guitar sounds, you could try the Jackson SLSMG instead. No dumb inlay, comparable neck, but it also doesn't have the fixed trem-style bridge and fine tuners. but it does have the mahogany neck & body, neck through, big awesome frets, and sounds fantastic with EMGs.

Electrical tape gets very gummy. I wouldn't recommend it.
Would leather dye take to the inlay material if you dyed the fretboard black? If not, you could always take a sharpie to the inlays before every show.

or!
get a new board put on, you can get any wood you want that way, and its pretty cheap. luthier here charges $200 for an unbound neck, plus cost of frets. you could reuse brand new ones though so yeah

I thought about this over coffee, and remembered this thread. Of course, my imagination couldn't stop there. Although useless, here are my recommendations if you don't want to take them all out: S VEN (swedish guitar) EVEN EVE I'm such a dork. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

How 'bout add some more letters before it so it says something else.
Like: BULBGETSEVEN (Bulb Gets Even) Or add some lines to the "V" so it says "SEMEN"

i feel your pain. this guitar haunts me daily. it is also everything i want in an axe, but that inlay... grrr... one of these days i maybe just get it and be done with it. if they had only put his hate inlay on it. i've toyed with the idea of the mtm2, but it's another black guitar, i dont want another black guitar.
i wish they would just put that bridge in a 7

You not keen on the RGT6EX? It's cheaper but it doesn't have the locking bridge.
