Has anyone ever tried building their own amp?
Am curious, as valve amps are inherently simple, and trying to figure out whether I should give myself a pet project to do for a while to see what I can build and if I can make something that doesn't sound like utter turd!

yeah the ax84 is the best place to start. It will cost around $200-$400 depending on amp and parts. Doberman Music Products sells great kits based off of the original ax84 designs. If you ever want to get into building and designing tube amps go here London Power Tube Amplifiers, Tube Amp Books, Tube Amp Kits and pick up a few books by Kevin O'Connor, they're basically the bible(s) of tube amp theory.

hey i was also thinking about this. i'm going to go to college next year for most likely business/electronics, which is a course very similar to electrical engineering with some additional business courses. will these electrical courses give me the necessary theory to be able to build my own amps and stuff?

you can get wiring diagrams on orangeforum.com of lots of orange heads, including a high gain model, i think the rockerverb 50.
bluesbreaker diagrams are fairly common, as are 100w superlead diagrams. from there its pretty much a board and soldering components together. the only real "hard" part should be biasing the tubes

There are a lot of kits out there to build SLO-100 clones as well, but I've also heard a lot of people saying that building your own tube amp is much more expensive than you would think.
Personally though, I want to do it as well, just to make the kind of tube amp I have always wanted... 50x2 watt head so you can run stereo effects without needing a second power amp.

I'd be kind of leery of taking on something like this, mostly due to the energy that can be stored and unleashed upon an unsuspecting arm/ finger/ nose/ toe/ tounge/ leg/ wenis/ etc...

Yeah, I know someone who built his own tube amp (never saw/heard it) and apparently electrocuted himself twice It was pretty much the first thing he told me the first time I met him

I too have been pondering this since I stumbled onto this guy on youtube who makes like these hot 3-12W tube powered amps that range from plexi to mesa kinda stuff.

what's the point of that? there is no practical usage for that in a guitar amp application. Full range hi-fi sound maybe.
