Poll: Carvin V3, Peavey JSX, or Carvin Legacy
Which one owns, why, channel by channel?
I've only tried the Peavey JSX, with an Ibanez V with the Dimarzio D-Activators, and I really liked it. Plenty of Gain without the need for a Disto pedal. Feedback, Discuss, Begin.

I've only ever played the JSX and only briefly, but I've never heard good things about either of the Carvins. Apparently the Legacy is good for something similar to Vai's tone (which obviously makes sense) but it's not supposed to be very good at general high gain tones.

I've never been impressed with the JSX for my needs whenever I've used it, it's a fine amp, just doesn't do what I want it to.

I've played the JSX and Legacy, not the V3. The JSX is a great sounding amp that covers a lot of ground. The Legacy is one killer lead playing gain channel and a sweet clean channel.
If you need multiple tones and want to play metal, I would vote JSX. |

Out of the three I would only pick the JSX, but the poll is rather limited and amp preference will always be a matter of taste.
I will say that the same day I played through a JSX I also jammed on an ENGL Powerball, and frankly the JSX felt like a cheap practice amp in comparison. The ENGL had so much gain on tap it nearly blew me away. The controls are so dynamic and responsive that the settings I dialed in before taking it off of standby were too extreme. It had so much headroom and oomph that I almost didn't buy the Mesa Mark IV I went to the store for in the first place. I will add that for modern metal it is more appropriate than the Mesa - the Mesa just happened to be my all-time dream amp and I was not leaving the store without it. Expand your options man.

I was targeting all tube 3 channel amps that are for the most part, between 1000.00 to 1500.00.
I'm open to suggestions.

id save up a bit more and go for a powerball sorry if that isnt any help
personally id take a powerball over the jsx any day but i play death/thrash (modern) metal and i wouldnt be satisfied using the crunch channel on the jsx as my rythm tone. the lead channel is nice though. |

You can easily pick up a used Dual or Triple Rec for what you're looking to spend, and either would handily smoke all three amps you're suggesting. They're far more versatile, too.

For a touch more, someone here is selling their Roadster (which IMO, levels the Rectos).

i wasn't too impressed by any of those amps (which is sad, because i had a legacy for a while), but i'd probably go with the JSX.
the legacy has a really nice clean channel, but the lead channel doesn't have too much gain, and just isn't good for high gain metal tones. the v3 also has a great clean channel, and the gain channels have a little more gain than the legacy, but it sounds like solid state gain. the gain channels on that amp are terrible. edit: go with a used dual or triple rec! NOW!

Nope. I'd rather have a 5150/6505 for the money and buy a decent cab. or the II/+ versions if cleans were important.

I do.
![]() I can't really agree with the "Recto smokes all 3" statement, because I am not really into the Recto sound. I could indeed have bought a used Dual Rec for what I paid for my JSX, but I just didn't dig the sound as much. I also could have gotten a 6505, but I friggin' hate 6505/5150's with a passion. It's hard to be objective about something that's so subjective.

I still need to play a dual rec and a 5150. but i loves my jsx (who wouldnt - pro high gain head for nothin? im in!)
im wondering how it'll sound with a better cab or speaker upgrade though.. gotta find a marshall cab to test out since i cant find a local mesa dealer.

Amp Taste is so subjective. You really need to go out and play as many as you can to decide what works for you.
I love my JSX, but I also love my 5150, but I would use them for different situations , neither one is a do it all amp, they each have a very distinct tone. I love the Mark IV as well, and the Roadster, but I must say after playing thru an Engl SE last 1/2 stack last weekend, that would be my next amp (if I could afford one). Just a ton of very usable great tones came out of that thing, tons of gain, beautiful cleans. Amazing amp.

jeff, its pushing my triple X slant.
i am debating looking for 4 used speakers.. which is cheaper then getting another 412 (my mom would apparently kill me for selling off either of my cabs to fund a new one..ghey)

In that case, 4 V30's, or perhaps 4 Eminence Legends. But yeah, I honestly am not a fan of Peavey speakers, so I think you'll notice a big improvement with new ones.

JSX out of those three, hands down.
However for the $, a roadster is hard to pass up (only a few hundred more...) , and I do own a pball for a reason haha. I'd put it this way. I'd play my pball over them all, but I'd play a roadster before any other dual/triple rec or a JSX... |

Recently I have been loving the JSX, kind of patching the FX loop to hit the power amp harder (definately play this amp with the fx loop on and patched, it really makes a huge difference to the amount of balls this thing has) and I've been getting some very crisp stupidly meshuggah like tones out of it. Plus it's louder that way
![]() The mistake I made with the JSX in the beginning was thinking it'd sound "american mesa" like and be able to do that, or like a marshall, in fact, it's neither. I am getting more and more into this amp, to the point where I am thinking of building a pedal board for it. or getting a seperate rack setup for use with it.

and I actually prefer the jsx to the 5150 as well; Less scratchy.

...the other thing is to use the low gain input.
But yeah, the JSX has character, just have to approach it without trying to make it sound like something it isn't. I was thinking of selling mine for a while, but I don't think i would anymore.
