GAS food: ENGL powerball + SE clips (also VHT CLX and mark IV)

i bumped on this dude's soundlick with some GAS-feeding sound clips of the aforementioned amps while googling for powerball clips.

as people often ask for soundclips i thought this might be interesting for many of us gearaholics...

...the powerball clips sounds nothing like the one i messed around with a few weeks ago. I should definitely give it another shot sometime.

I'm not really liking those clips at all, some of the have the midi drums too high in the mix, and the guitars are very drowned out. The crash cymbals especially interfere with the guitar sound. The "Final Product" clip really sounds awful for example, and I really do wonder what he recorded it with, becuase I never heard an SE sounding like that.

I think the clip I like the best is probably Strange Deja Vu with the VHT CLX. Apart from that, even the Mark IV sounds crummy.

Dissapointing.

I think those clips are pretty good. Not the greatest, at all, but since they all sound like they have been recorded the same way, you can make direct comparisons between them

The powerball recordings seemed a touch brighter than most of the SE recordings I heard. however, the SE did have more overal mids

With that said, I use an OD in front of my PB and it sounds a bit more aggressive than those. I also have a very strong right hand pick, which is definitely the key to my tone (usually).

Next time you try out a PB (or any other Engl), definitely ask them to get an OD pedal out. Try it with the gain close to zero, tone half way, and volume at least half or more. Keep the gain around 2-4 and your mids on focused and at least on level 6 or higher. Seriously, this is a great tone.

I thought the "Rock You Like A Hurricane" cover had some pretty damn good crunch sounds coming out of that Mark IV. Didn't really listen to much else, it sounded pretty generic. Not a fan of the VHT tones he got.

+1
The powerball already has a pretty mean tone and an OD in front just makes it more so, I usually put a EQ in the loop to further accentuate its growl.
