New to tube amps, need feedback on Q:'s

i just got a mesa rectoverb head, and i running it through a marshall 1912 2x12. i play an ibanez 7421 with an emg 707 in the bridge. i play metal. i was wondering
what noise gate to get? i have never owned one or used one, so any idea is a good one.
also what tubes would you use? it is the first series rectoverb that you have to use the 6l6's.

There's a bunch of Mesa users on here who can help with the tubes.

For noise gates, the Boss NS-2 and the ISP Decimator are good choices.

Are you looking for a pedal or a rack gate? I've got a Boss NS-2 pedal that I like.

I won't comment on tubes as I don't own a recto, and don't want to do the 'well I've heard'

JJ brand tubes.

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

a search on either of your topics will bring up alot of info from older threads...

the consensus seems to be JJ tubes from www.eurotubes.com and either ISP decimator or NS2 for noise suppression/reduction. IIRC there are some players on here that use Hush as well.

I have an ISP and I love it, don't have any experience with the Boss unit.

I have JJ tubes in my DR, they sound great, have been very reliable, and the prices are very competetive...that said this is the first set I've had.

JJ's 12AX7's are quite dark sounding while the Tung Sol is brighter. Both seem to be the pick of the litter in current production. Go for short plate 12ax7's if you're using high gain as they don't feedback as easily.

For 6L6's I like th SED's. Haven't tried the JJ's. If you leave the amp stock then get a set suitable for that amp's non-adjustable bias. Modding the amp (go somewhere reputable) would potentially allow the use of EL34's, KT77's etc. I'm really liking KT77's lately.

Noise gates: I use a Boss NS-2 at the front and a Rocktron Hush C and that kills ALL noise apart from transformer hum. Its expensive, but the two together definitely make the difference i wanted. I'd go for an NS-2 simply because its price hasn't increased by $40 as soon as people started using them, and they didn't even redesign the ISP for that price change.
