I know players who have done it. BUT, you basically have to use Hot Rod series amps, on the clean channel, and get your distortion from a stop box. In the almost 20 years they've been making the Hot Rod series amps, I have yet to play one the doesn't sound mediocre at best when using the "Drive" (overdrive) channel, and downright ratty/awful when using the "More Drive" function (which ups the gain to metal levels). Ask almost anybody who uses Hot Rod Deluxes or Hot Rod Devilles, and they will say the same thing - nobody buys a Hot Rod series amp for its distortion. They buy it for its clean sound, and use a stomp box for distortion (which makes them sound pretty good when playing metal).
Also, you have to watch for a Master Volume issue on some of them, Due to incorrectly speced, or defective components, some of the the Hot Rod series amps' Master Volumes don't work very well - they're sort of all or nothing. In other words, up to about 1 or 2 on the Master Volume, they're way too quiet volumewise, and then after that setting, the amps are almost full volume!, which means unless you get the Master Volume circuit modified (it's a simple mod), or serviced under warranty, you can forget about medium volume. Supposedly, Fender has dealt with this issue, in the latest production runs. As for their reliablilty - the verdict's out on them. Some players think they're tough as nails, and built like a tank. Others (including a guy I jam with off and on, who used to have a Hot Rod Deville 212 - the 2x12 version), think they have reliabilty issues (my friend with the Hot Rod Deville 212 ended up getting rid of his due to it breaking down - and it was basically brand new). |

What about throwing an OD pedal in front of it? I don't know how much gain these amps have, but if it has a rocky type gain, maybe he can try with an OD?

On the video below, go to the 4 minute mark, to hear what a Hot Rod Deville 410 sounds like at it's heaviest (More Drive) setttings. |

Hmm, sounds like you can get some good high gain with an OD pedal. You don't need 100% distortion. I'd at least try that, like borrow one just to see. If not, then yeah a separate distortion or even throwing an e530 in the loop return (if it has one)
On that vid, it sounds like's he's using his neck pups.

I'd be more concerned with the fact that the cabinet is an open back 4x10.

I have the HRDV 410, and it's just like everybody says. I leave the footswitch in the cabinet itself because I never leave the clean channel. The dirt section is absolute garbage. Fender knows about it, but it's not like Fender gives a shit because the amp sells so well.
I use a couple of distortion pedals in front of it, and I can get some decent metal tones. That said, I'll be selling it the minute I have anywhere near enough money for a Mark V.
