as low as you want? ive tuned mine down to Ab and you can still use the same chord shapes. it gets harder to make them sound out properly, but with practice it works just fine. Id like to hear your friends reasoning that the chords just dont work any lower than C. As it stands id wager theyre a bit suspect lol

As long as you keep the same intervals in tuning it, I don't see why any tuning would limit that.

Exactly, chords will just sound lower, as long as all strings are tuned down by the same amount (say 5 semitones per string), chords will still work.

Not the same as standard, but the same as in Drop D yes. If you did A Standard then yes, all the chord shapes would be exactly the same.

No, that is Drop A, which is just like tuning to Standard E and dropping the low E to a D.

You tune ALL strings down by the same amount. 7 semitones.

This would be A D G C E A

Niels is on a distinguished road
Could I know what string gauges you're using for this tuning?
I'd recommend 60/65 as a low A.
