I have rather small hands (fingers, mostly) and I still feel more comfortable on a 7-string neck. If like you the feel of the 7-string over the 6-string neck too, then definetily go for it. You'll notice a whole new world of possibilities after you get one.

The 7th string is beyond worth it.
For me it was like a gift from god (or satan, your choice) I would always write and compose cool melodies that were based on the high E and B string, and during the 6 string days I always wished to take it a step further and make those melodies some bad ass riffs. The 7 allows me to do that, I dont have to, but the option is there. Its the option of doing more that allows the 7 string to become what I feel is the purest form of the guitar (at least for me) I do play 6's quite often for some nice C# or D standard, or a little lower, my fretless 6 is in C. Its also a great benefit for a bass player, as the great Dave Fiuczynski said, it allows your bass player to go off and either solo or play different stuff as you contribute to holding the bottom end of a song. It all hit me when I first jammed with a 7 with my old band. Before the 7 I was experimenting with different tunings, D standard, pure 5ths, etc. While the 5ths was nice, the learning curve got to me for the time (im actually planning on seriously hitting some 5ths tunings this summer!!!) I decided to settle on B standard, then one of the shops I work for had gotten a 7 in stock; an Ibanez RG7621. They let me borrow it for the week, and my first jam with the beast I feel instantly in love with it. Reaching down into the deeper notes and then pulling into the solo's and getting the tones I was used to getting on the 6 but was missing in B standard. The 7 truly allowed me to paint what I hear and feel in my head, it is the single most greatest addition to my life as a musician, but thats just me ![]() |
