Naive question...

Is there anything particularly special about the touchstyle instruments? It seems that their general geometry makes it easier to look at them "top down"... But there's no reason one couldn't play in that manner on a conventional guitar, right?

The way it is strung up helps with fingering.

The action is set stupidly low on them compared to normal guitars. If you wanted the same set-up on a regular guitar you'd probably have to shave your frets down, like Stanley Jordan does. It's perfectly possible to use a normal guitar in this way, it just requires more effort, and well...I'm lazy!
