New ERG Tuning Idea

Eb-B-Ab-Db-Gb-B-Eb-Ab

Ab standard with 7th and 8th tuned to a reverse minor Ab triad. Crushingly thick triads on the 6th, 7th, and 8th strings with room for intricate chord voicings.

The chord voicings don't have to be of low pitch, and of course the clarity could be used much higher up the neck: The shapes stay the same, but with better clarity.

Also, because their tuned in reverse 1-3-5, note choice and chordal lines are at your fingertips.

Not to mention using the bottom 3 as drone strings for a 1-3-5-1 progression, or percussive and agressive pedal tone style like Sikth.

That Eb is going to be hard to pull out, at least a .090 I think.

This just screams for an electric theorbo (therobo) -- The giant spoon on the right in the video below. That's instrument #4 in my build queue .

Ray

EDIT: I think 'theorbo' is the correct spelling, but I have seen 'therobo' a fair amount too.

A really big lute?

Anyhow, not sure how to tune to Eb that low. And who manufactures a .90 0.o

It's more or less a regular guitar/lute, with one set of regular string, and then another set of longer string that are "harp" strings (no fingerboard under them) and typically played open. Here's another video:
I think our master of the odd instruments (Desacrated) posted this video before.

interesting idea, dude.
what gauges do you suggest for 6th and 7th?
maybe using the same gauges for both? (B & Ab)

IMO your best bet for that would be a 30" -> 28" fan.

That one guy makes strings that tune up to A at 30", right?

Wow, any idea of the speaking lengths of the bass strings on that theorbo Ray?

Edit - found some info here: Magno

190 cm for the open bass strings!

That's a really interesting idea...it almost reminds me of some of the tunings I've seen on classical ten-string guitars.

http://www.tenstringguitar.com/

I imagine it would make the guitar resonate in a nice way, especially on an acoustic instrument. What sort of guitar were you considering for this tuning?

It's #4 in the queue. Let me start working on #3 before I flesh-out the details on #4 The general idea is to start with standard "long scale" bass strings and then knock-off space for: saddle-to-bridge, nut-to-tuning-machines, and the nameless-bit-that-will-be-needed-to-attach-the-string-to-the-tuning-machine.

In truth, perhaps a Sherman 8. If I could afford a 8 string acoustic, I would.

Well, I would have a fretboard that went to 32 frets, so I could hit a high E on the Ab string.
