Ibby 8 string too dark

I've got a first run 8 string with lundgrens and it is incredibly dark and almost muffled sounding compared to say, my 2027 with an evo bridge. Its got 500k pots and there is probably a half inch from the string to the pickup. Anybody see a problem with the setup there? Should i raise the pickups, swap the pots to 1megs?

gimme some ideas! mike sherman, zimbloth, etc this means you!

Are you sure your tone knob is wired the right way?

I kind of agree, mine seems to be, but then again it shouldn't be that much darker.

Raising the pickups so they are really close to the strigns will help to a point. You probably do have something wired wrong.

I think there might be some problems with the wiring as I remember you got Lundgrens in this guitar wired with EMG pots first (trashy tech?)

I personally think I'd wire this guitar with Lundgrens using 1 MOhm pots as it is only 27" scale basswood body guitar. Just me

Well, duh... it's painted black.

Twiddling the knobs doesn't help? I'd raise the pickup a bit.. or more than a bit...

Also, try unsoldering all of the pots and connecting the pickups straight to the switch and the switch straight to the amp. If that seems like too much work, snip one wire of the capacitor in a place that leaves a good amount of lead on both sides so you can solder it back if you want...

The moral of this story, and many others, may turn out to be 'never trust the guitar tech'...

sounds like its definitely a connection problem or a faulty pickup or something

its a basswood guitar, which really just allows the sound of the pickup to do most of the work since basswood = pretty much flat eq if anything leading toward bright and lundgrens are very bright as well (as are the emg 808s for that matter)
so i mean you technically should have a pretty bright guitar overall

I have my M8 wired to to a 1meg pot, with the distance set at 1/8" @ high E, and 3/16" @ the low F, which I find optimal for a nice hot signal. Any closer and you're going into magnetic string-pull territory. Hot and clear.
BTW, the difference with the 1meg pot is subtle, and not as dramatic as say going from a 250k to a 500K would be. Just adds a tiny bit more sparkle to top end.
You do have it wired in series (yellow/red together, green/braid ground, blue hot) right?

Please be kind to snakes. They can't help it.

and presumption is the mother of all error...... I'll take exception to that statement - you just presumed he had it done by a tech, and I'll agree, there are some bad ones who fuck it up for honest, thorough ones, well, like myself.

I would have thought parallel wiring would make it phasey and 'hollow' sounding...not really dark.

That's right, but I was just making sure he had the right wires, and I have no idea if he has his tone pot/cap still either. Just trying to rule out all possibilities..
