Thinking about making the jump to 8 strings

Hey guys i have been kicking around a design for an extended range seven for a while and thought, why not an eight.

Specs:
36 or 38 frets
28 5/8" scale
ebony board
maple/ walnut neck thru
locking tuners
hipshot bridge
EMG 808 or Lundgren M8
1 volume 1 tone
graphtech piezo pickup
Low B to High A tuning

For a high A I'd go 25.5" scale or lower, if not finding strings working would be a pain (ie: only Gary Goodman provide strings tunable to high A at that scale)

Shorter would be correct answer.

Even with those strings, a high A at 28 5/8" will feel like a cheese slicer.

How about a compound scale to relieve some of the tension on the treble side? Something along the lines of 25.5" to 28" or so, although it may be difficult getting 38 frets in at 25.5", so maybe if you can tune down a little bit?

I really like the rest of your specifications, though.

^^ but it will be neck heavy imo
and this number of frets even at straight 30" scale will be almost unplayable in the highest positions. At shorter scale it's not for playing, only for looks

Pretty cool, but I have to agree with the sentiment about going with a shorter scale if you're tuning B to A. The high A will likely suffer horribly at that scale length, and there's really no reason the low B would need that kind of scale length. I think 25.5" should work fine. Even at 25.5", people have trouble tuning up to high A (they usually settle for G instead), though if you're using Gary's strings, it should be doable.

If your going to have that many frets you can use garry's string to tune to high G. You will still get some movement and you will still have really high notes.
But I have to vote for a fanned fret design also, if you check out the tuning in a string calculation you'll see that it is somewhat hard to do what you are after with a normal scale.
In my opinion.
