Is 14 strings enough?

There's a guy over on the talkbass forum who's almost finished with his 14-string -

32" to 22" spread on the fan. He's gotta wind some kind of pickups, then it's just down to the scutwork - oh, and figuring out how to play the damn thing.

This bass is more or less a fail. But at least he tried.
That doesn't make the idea of a 14-string completely bullocks.

and it's not even finished and this guy started almost 3 months ago and no more updates

This is more a fanned tap guitar than a bass. He should use some alternate tuning and a stereo config with 2 pickups to cover all the strings

Really, that thing is rediculous. How the heck can you play something like that effectively?
