Fret fanning question

What would be an ideal fan for an eight-string tuned B-A? I'm thinking 26.5" to 23.5". How well would that work?

I'd say it would depend on your reach and the availability of strings that will tune to high A at any given scale length. 24"-27" should work tolerably with standard 0.007s for the A, and the center strings would feel almost identical to the standard 25.5" scale.

But 'ideal'? Personal preference.

Why would you want something as short as 23.5" at the top? You'll suffer more with tuning stability problems with a scale like that than you would at 25.5"

That's one of the things I'm thinking about. The main thing I was wondering was whether that would be sufficient get a 7 gauge string to be playable and non-breakable at high A.

High A at 23-24" scale is more stable than at 25,5" scale guitar, I know I have both as you know and also a 30" scale

From my experience...
Personally I would better use something from 25" to 28" and use Garry's strings for top to reach highA to avoid heavy gauge at the bottom. But if someday you would like to have lowF# at longer scale, you will avoid heavy gauge for that.

But 23,5"-26,5" is very nice imo and no problems with custom strings at all, you can use 008 for highA from any brand. All existring mass production 007 strings are crap, so I suggest using 008.

Tell us your preferencies and we can give better answer for your needs.

All depends how tight bottom you like and how thick string as low B is a resonable choice for you.

I would really like to try a 24.5 to 26.5 for high A to low B, I think that would be really nice.

Oh, whoops! Didn't see you'd specified a tuning; I thought you were tuning F#-E

Papa Shank is a jewel in the rough
Uh, my old Oni 8 was really stable at 660-600mm using an 008 (don't know the brand). Can't say I was doing crazy bends on the A but she wasn't about to snap at any point of use.

Cool711 will become famous soon enough
If using a trem, I was advised the 22.75 was the best for high.
Don't know if that helps.
