A question for 8 stringers

I see a lot of guys picking up the new Ibanez 8 string and it got me wondering, are you guys playing those in bands or just by yourself? If you're jamming in bands what are the bass players doing, tuning wise?

I ask because as soon as I got my seven going all the bass players I worked with switched over to five or six stringers cuz they hated not being to able to go under me by an octave.

I'm a guitar loser that plays all by himself right now. As for the tuning thing, I've had my Conklin seven string bass with a low F# on it since January or so, so now I've got a guitar to go over that now.

My advice to any bass player is to tune how ever the hell they feel like tuning. My cousin tunes a five-string to G C F C G to get added range. I was playing a seven string in B+standard. It meant no one could rely on watching each other's fret position markers.

I know that a lot of guitarists and bassists alike get pretty miffed when they can't just mimic your finger positions, but you'd be surprised at how using different tunings can add a new dimension to the groove.

That said, a standard 35" scale bass can handle a low F# is need be, and I know a few bass players who already tune that low on a five-string.

I actually like doing unison stuff with bass/guitar. I play in the same octave as the guitar often, with no ill effects. Or I'll be adding some kind of harmony/tensions.

I'm planing on going under by an octave, playing unison, playing above by an octave, and try to make interesting melodies that have the most common intervals like 5th, minor/major 3th, dominant, major, diminished aug 7th-9th-11th and so on.
