I really wanna start messing around with the the tuning of my guitar, anyone have tips on so weird and crazy tunings? If it helps tunings suited to crazy avant-garde music.

All forths is pretty uncommon. Open chord tunings (not like cgcgce), like minor chords, or for super br00tz, all tritones.

You say that, but on Shawn Lanes album ''The Tritone Fascination'' he tuned a nylon string classical guitar to all tritones- specifically for songs like Tri-Heaven and Tri 7/5. Not br00tz in the least.

so this all fourths is just raising the top two strings up a half step? isn't a guitar tuned in fourths with the exception of the interval betweent the G and B?

If you have an 8, anything but F or Tosin's Drop E are pretty much unheard of!
-I'm an 8 string guitarist, not an 8th string guitarist. -Music is an expression of emotion, not a challenge of who can play faster or who can tune lower. |

BADFAD if you think alternate tunings are gimmicky.

Yeah man, all sixths
I have my fretless bass tuned this way. You will of course need to choose custom gauges carefully to avoid floppy or overtight strings, use a tension chart or calculator. The only problem is sixths can sometimes create "too much range" (as if haha ... etc.), but i'm sure it can be done on a 6 string guitar. The steps in gauge and tonal jumps from string to string are huge.

6 string guitar in 6ths would be nuts! That's like 9 string range or more I think.

i've been messing about with AEBEAbDb recently and it sound killer. just take which ever drop tuning you normally play, then drop the two heaviest string down another tone.

All fifths.
All major thirds. EDIT: I remember a thread I posted to talk about getting 8 string range out of a 6 by replacing the lowest 2 or 3 strings with bigger strings tuned and octave lower. Example (bold notes are an octave lower than usual): EADGBE or EADGBE You could also tune your axe like a chapman stick, where one half is a stack of fourths and the other is a stack of fifths, like FCGDGCF, or FBbEbAbEbBbF, makes for some interesting chordal possibilities. ![]() No Nation. Quote:
Having both As in the lower octave (as in like the A above standard E) might sound really cool as well. I prefer it as CABbGAE though, the A being higher than the G annoyed me so I switched them around. Despite the fact that it no longer spells "cabbage", I feel it's close enough most people will get the idea and assume I just made a typo in my guitar tuning, since that happens all the time, right? I think I'm going to paint my thumbs green and play hippie music on that guitar now... |

If only there were a TransTrem for 7's, 8's and 9's... sigh...
![]() Using approximations of other instruments can also be a little different and fun: 7-string qin (to keep with the extended rangedness). Low to high E2, G2, A2, C3, D3, E3, G3 (best with a neck that can reproduce a larger number o harmonics.) ![]() "All the World's a stage, ... and the rest is Vaudeville..." -Allan Moore |

I used to tune to AEEABEA. Very symmetrical.
Yes, that's two low Es. I always wanted to try BADBABE... |
