NGD: Carvin DC800 Swamp Ash
Hey all!
After the agonizing wait (I think waiting for the UPS guy was harder than waiting for it to be built), my DC800 has arrived. It is freaking BEAUTIFUL. I could not be more floored at how amazing this sounds and looks. Exceeded my wildest expectations. I would rant and rave about how great this is, but I'll get to the pics first: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Basically, this is now the best guitar I own. ![]() It sounds MASSIVE (like previous comments I made about the pickups from what I heard at NAMM). The pickups are also very articulate and open sounding. Basically, I'm keeping these pickups in the guitar. Great job designing these Carvin. Here's a short clip I whipped up to show how large yet defined this guitar sounds. WOW. DC800 Clip by expressivemusicality on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

I expect that would be a fairly bright guitar. Care to comment?

It is very bright and very loud. It almost has a piano-like quality to it. I personally dig how bright it sounds, the lead tones cut through everything and the distortion rhythm tones have so much clarity to them. The pictures really don't do the wood grain justice though. The birdseye maple is really to die for.
Edit: if you want to hear a clip, I included one at the end of my original post. Should give you an idea of the tone I'm getting out of it now. Looks great, I am planning on buying one soon but I am torrent between a natural quilted maple or dragonburst. How is the neck in comparison to ibbys or anything else?

Love the fingerboard, and how it matches the headstock.

That fingerboard almost looks edible- and delicious.
It reminds me of cheesecake.Dammit, where's my cheesecake! Ask enough questions, and you can answer anything. |

The neck is incredibly comfortable. A bit thicker than the RG2228, but not by much. I don't think you're going to have any trouble playing it, there was really nothing about the neck that set me off, it felt natural as if I had been playing this guitar for a long time already.

Did you option 50 that top? I ask because I was told solid tops were the standard on all DC800s. I had to call twice to find that out because I thought one of the sales reps messed up one of my orders.
Now I'm nervous again. And my guitar is suppose to be done/ship tomorrow. Though that birdseye maple board makes me glad I switched from Ebony. |

I think the breakdown in communication is that if you have a top...they wont do a showing on the neck like on other models...drop top only

Yes, apparently that is standard on DC800s but not on the other models, which I didn't know. I would've assumed it would have been standard on all models. The first sales rep I had was awesome, but the second guy didn't seem to know what was going on at all. He asked if I wanted a 'drop top' and said it wasn't standard on DC800s- but I told him it didn't even show up on the builder and the last sales rep said nothing about it....so then I had to call back the next day to talk to the first sales rep (still don't understand why they can't look at an order someone else put in) and he basically told me the other guy was mistaken and that the 'drop top' or whatever was standard. So then I had to call back again (because sales rep 1 can't handle sales rep 2's sale) and have him remove the cost of that option since it was standard. When I saw this, I had to ask. |

$999 starting price before you add the options. They go as expensive as you want depending on what options you add from there.

The guitar came ready to play as soon as you pull it out of the case for the first time. Perfectly set up with low action. As far as fret access, I think it's the best of all my guitars. Since it's a neck-through, there's pretty much no heel. The contour on the back where the neck joins the body is super nice and comfortable. You'll definitely like it when you get it. Pretty sweet! I was originally going to go with maple fretboard as I look the look and the brightness of maple. I picked Ebony as the stark black on a bare alder and walnut/maple 5 piece neck should look striking!

Like the aesthetic, very clean. I spent a while looking for that sound bite Rush made "That's Nice" but I can't remember what song it was from... boo hiss.
