NGD
One of the most intense NGDs ever, so awesome!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So now that youve seen the pics. Review time. So far, loving the 27" scale, but on an 8 more would be too much for me, the neck is already wide as ....! i got big hands but my fingers aint too long, so this is gonna take some time to adapt to. construction is spot on perfect, amazing job from team J craft! the bride is probably the nicest ive ever played, super easy to tune and maintain + floyd type of stability! my only gripe is with the EMGs, they sound really really dull and dark, i had to turn my presence up to 80% wtf? im gonna have to play around with the pickups on this one... question for the 8 stringers. its got a 70 as the low F#, its way too loose, what do most of you guys use? |

thanks!
id probably go with the 80 since the 70 feels REALLY loose. do they even make 80 gauge guitar strings, or do I have to buy a bass string and wind it down? |

Daddario and Ernie Ball both make thicker strings, even up to 0.090. You should not have to use bass strings.

thanks! its john petrucci's.
Also, intense, because its the first time I played an 8 today, its not like any instrument I've ever played before, so intense! The RG on the right ive had for 1.5 years now, amazing guitar. The modded RG on the left ive had for 6 months now, same guitar just with a fixed (hipshot) bridge, also awesome, but im gonna sell it soon. |

D'Addario XL Nickel Wound Acoustic or Electric .080, NW080
The .080s really do feel solid but they are almost a little to thick for my tastes and sit high on the nut and saddle because of that. After running that very .080 for a few months, I put on a .074 and it does sit lower and sound a little more guitar like, enough so that I think I'll be sticking with it. If anything I might try to search for a .076. Get the .080 through if you plan on dropping that lowest string as low as Eb or D. It will remain stable. And nice guitar! 2228s never really disappoint. |

Damn I already miss her. :p
About the sound remember that you are messing with lower frequencies than what you're used to, it's normal that it sounds muddy at first, adjust d presence and mid's on your amp, and don't push d bass to much it doesn't need to. Emg's are a bit sterile for sure, but nod muddy at all, they get really tight once you have d correct eq settings. Strings tension, I got those strings for regular tuning, now it's dropped to E, return to regular tuning and you should be fine. Also, I noticed a lot of people around here go for ridiculous thick gauges, but well it's a matter of preference I guess. For posterior reference, anything over 0.68 won't go through d post on d tuner. I'm sure you gonna love it, it's such an awesome axe, will help you improve you chops! Cheers bro! It only took 2 sessions with the 8 string to really get used to playing it. So I'm glad to be a part of the RG2228 club! Still got to figure out what to do with the pickups, the EMGs are ok, but they really lack that top end sparkle of passives.

Thanks again guys, really appreciated!
Hella loving the RG2228! At first, I was like WTF did I just buy, but now I can't imagine a world without 8 strings! I'm still trying to figure out what pickups to get for it, the EMGs are totally killing this guitar for me... Quote:

Try the 18V mod, it really makes a world of difference. I'm still thinking of maybe switching to the 808X's though.

yea, i want to do the 18v mod, i just cant find a store that sells 9v sockets, its ridiculous. I dont want to order them online for 1 euro and pay 5 for shipping...
but i suppose my main issue with the EMGs is that they sound so flat and lifeless, almost dead. Plus they have no high end sparkle, which drives me insane, i have to tweak my amps like crazy and only then I'm kind of satisfied. I'm not sure if the 18v mod would fix these issues... Over the weekend I recorded a clip with the RG2228 and my RG7620 (stock pups) and it was ridiculous how much fatter, clearer and more defined the 7 string sounded, the RG2228 was only audible on the accented notes while all the alternate picking was completely lost in the mix... |
