![]() ![]() | I'd recommend Aquarian drum heads from my personal experience. I'd suggest a Super Kick II for bass drums (you should be fine with the front heads) that should give it nice sound with muting built in, Preformence II's for the tom batters (they'll give you a duller sound but will sound good for metal especially if you like the way lower tuned toms sound) and Classic clears for bottoms (if you even want to but they do help it sound better), and on my snare I have coated Studio-X with power dot in the center for extra strength. my girlfriend says i'm totally METAL! ![]() balls. ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() | A few comments: 1) Freaking awesome of you to buy him a kit! And a nice score, too! No digs against ZBT's, they're designed to be beaten the hell out of and sound good, perfect for a starting drummer (and some pros I know)! ![]() 2) If he's not going to use the hihat pedal, having the hats on the right is absolutely fine, and is probably a better idea than putting on the left anyway, for a right handed person. No crossing means keeping the chest and body open, which means more comfort and more power! FYI, The New Breed by Gary Chester covers this, and is required reading for every drummer. 3) An adjustable throne might be a good investment for him, he's sitting a little higher than recommended (ideally, thighs would be parallel to the floor); on the other hand, a little too high is better than too low. Too low is baaaaad for the knees, hips, and back! ![]() 4) If he IS going to sit that high, he reeeaaaallly needs to raise that snare! That's why he's got all those dents in the head, the stick is hitting the head almost point-on! Raise that snare up til it's just under the tom rims (or in that general area... low enough to be comfortable, high enough not to hurt! ).5) For both of you, but especially him: GET SOME FUCKING EARPLUGS!!! With those ZBT's in particular, all that extremely loud high end is going to fuck his (and probably your) hearing up fast. In addition, they're right about head (ear) high on him - great ergonomically, horrible for the hearing. Earplugs at every practice are required.6) Yeah, um, how do I get in on a deal like this? ![]() Seriously, an awesome thing for you to do. Maybe blow another $250 and sponsor him some lessons with a good teacher, get some basics covered like posture, grip, rudiments, and some good basic exercises to work on. You know, the kind of stuff every self-taught player wishes he'd done and ends up having to relearn years later! ![]() MY Space - writing about depression and music MY Music - writing about depression and... well, music If you develop an ear for sounds that are musical it is like developing an ego. You begin to refuse sounds that are not musical and that way cut yourself off from a good deal of experience. ~ John Cage Silence is the fabric upon which the notes are woven. ~ Lawrence Duncan |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Agreed, on everything BUT throne height. Too low is really bad, but sitting higher than thighs parallel isn't that bad. A lot of people sit higher up, like Longstreth, and a couple others. I think it's mostly for heel down players to get some more speed/power, but I don't know I sit high and pretty far back as well, and play heel up. Then again, I can't really drum that well ![]() |
