NDD (Middle Eastern Content)

I've been itching to get my spazz on lately, so I decided I'd pick up a percussion instrument. Portability was a big factor in my research, as I don't put as much energy into practicing instruments when they're bulky and a pain in the ass to lug around, set up, or require me to go to them rather than them going with me (....ing piano. ). I've been doing African percussion at school for a while, so I have some experience with non-Western percussion, but up until now I have not owned any drums. I did, however, know that I didn't want to deal with sticks. Hand drums all the way, baby. Tabla are a little pricey for just starting, I couldn't find any good djembe in my price range, but I found a few darboukas that I liked. I weighed a few options (like this Turkish style one, or this Egyptian style drum), but ended up finding a ceramic darbuka on Craigslist that had a bit more mojo.

Full Circle is apparently a Californian company. From what I see, they make some beautiful instruments for the money and reviews seem to be favorable, so I went for it. The darbuka I got is on the small side (12" long and 8" diameter), but it's very responsive. I'm still having trouble getting a good doum (I've been playing for about six hours, so they're not yet consistent.), but the teks are very much alive. Obviously, I don't know the difference between a good and a bad darbouka yet, but what sounds I've been able to produce sound convincing to my ear. This guy has been a ton of help in learning the technique and rhythms:

Its like under $80 for tablas man.

You can even get super high end ones custom made from india for like $300. But then you have to have relatives there I guess...tell mesh to pick some up for you next time. He was just there like over december.

But seriously, I'll try to throw something together the next time my band does an acoustic show.
