Probably. Take the pole piece screws out.

Should pop right off. If it's a bit sticky afterwards, it's likely just some wax. But I doubt it will be.

after closer inspection, it looked like the pole pieces were screwed into the backplate. is this what is holding it in?
not on any Duncan i've seen--the threaded pole pieces are just stuck through unthreaded holes in the baseplate, not actually screwed into it.

i had the same problem with the Duncan i took apart for a magnet swap. the tall sides of the baseplate made it harder to get off. i had to unwind all the tape, and i kept gently working it backwards and forwards until it released.

other folks here have magnet-swapped in Duncans by pushing the magnet out the side with the baseplate still on. you might look into that instead.

nah, i didn't want to mess with them. i'm not too sure what they are screwed into, and i dont want to break anything, haha.

does anyone know if i would damage anything by unscrewing the pole pieces?

Yep. I've done all that shit many times.

I've pretty much done everything to pickups short of actually rewinding them (so far. )

i might try rewinding the pickups in my jbass. Timmy C from RATM/Audioslave got a set of vintage 50's jbass pickups that were messed, rewound em, and their now in his main bass. the pickups in his other basses are actually duplicates of the ones he made handwound from the fender custom shop. Id like to get into actually making pickups

You really shouldn't need to REMOVE the baseplate

You don't need to remove the baseplate. You can see the magnet under the coils and above the baseplate, between the lugs, and you can push it out on the side that doesn't have wires sticking out.

No unscrewing necessary.

And rewinds are really not that hard, they just take careful setup and patience.
