Quote:
Ok - 1. paraffin - about $1.50 or so. Found at a local supermarket (Meijer). Walmart, anything like that. 1 lb., which is 4 about 2.5" x 4" blocks. 2. Beeswax - got a 4 oz. bag of white beeswax pellets. Found at Michaels (craft and hobby store), cost was $6. They also have big slabs of beeswax, that cost about $15, but it's a LOT of wax. The pellets were hard to find, as they were sold out at the first Michaels, and there was only one bag at the second. The Hobby Lobby also had blocks of beeswax, smaller than the ones at Michaels, for $11. But still more than I needed. 3. Cooking thermometer - Target, $7. 4. Double boiler - I'm just going to use a large pot, filled with water, and suspend a small coffee can in the water, using metal clothes hangers to keep the coffee can stable. Instructions for making a double boiler are all over the net, and it is ESSENTIAL if you ever heat wax. (Wax is very flammable.) You mix the wax, 80% paraffin, 20% beeswax, and dip the pickups for about 20 minutes at a time. Wax must not exceed about 150 degrees F. There are all kinds of instructions online about wax potting pickups. Also, all of these materials are easily found online, but then you have to pay shipping. FTR, I found everything I listed cheaper online, but I wanted to avoid shipping if possible. |
