i don't think the A5 brings the output level down much... i always thought the Blaze neck had a lot of P.A.F. qualilties to it, the A5 just pushes those qualities further and takes away some of the high end harshness that i feel it has. the A5 seems to bump the midrange up a little and gives it this raspy growl that wasn't there with the Ceramic magnet.

all in all i found it pushes the Blaze into a more of an overwound vintage style P.A.F. sound. sort of a brighter, higher output SD Pearly Gates or Gibson 490R.

i agree. it doesn't reduce the output so much as change the tonality or EQ curve. which, depending on the exact frequency response of your amp or speakers, can lower the apparent audible output a tiny bit as high frequencies are reduced and mids are boosted.

Sounds like a winner then. Trying real hard not to swap these pickups, because I don't know what I'd put in there instead. haha

I just did my magnet swap and pickup swap today. Put the A8 into a Custom-7, which i'm now calling a "Custom8-7"

OUT: JB-7 + '59-7

IN: Custom8-7 + Jazz-7

I tried it out at rehearsal tonight, and oh my...

If anyone's looking for something a little different from the JB, i highly recommend the Custom with an AlNiCo 8 magnet. It's loud and punchy, and seems to roar with a much more even voice across the whole tonal spectrum.

I still have a bit of work to do in terms of balancing the output of the two pickups, but overall, i'm very pleased. I really love the JB and '59, but it was time for a change. This is exactly what i needed.

Interestingly, this is one of the first times i've actually found the middle position on a two-humbucker guitar to be useful. It seems that usually too many overtones get cancelled between the two pickups, and the middle position sounds kinda lifeless. The frequency response of these two pickups must be perfectly complementary, because the middle position gives a great additive of the tone from each, rather than a "subtractive" tone. Hard to describe, i know, but that's how it sounded to me.

This space intentionally left blank.

I'm contemplating getting in on this... I've got the stock pickups in both my Artcore and 7321, I'm thinking maybe A5 in the Artcore for more of a hotter PAF sound, and A8 in the 7321 to basically see if they make these pickups sound any more like a real pickup, I figure it can't hurt. Anyone swapped the magnets on Ibanez pickups? What were the results?

From what i've read, the stock Ibanez pickups all tend to be overwound to make them hot, but that results in them being muddy. I'd spend the money on "real" pickups first.

When we got together for a little guitar comparo, we tried a LOT of pickpus, and the stock RG7 pickups were easily the worst of the bunch. By far.

It's weird how they vary, like the pickups on the Artcores aren't bad at all, but they can't get them right on the RGs. Thanks for the input!

Well, Artcores are moderate-output jazzy guitars. Some of Ibanez's pickups in this category aren't bad at all. But their "hot" pickups tend to be compromised, from what i've read.
