Good news guys. This morning I took the time to rewire my guitar back up with the 500K pots, putting the tone back into the circuit. The squealing seems to have stopped (through my microcube at least) and it seems the sound is better. So....more time with it I guess
One thing I have learned though; I don't dig 1meg pots, and the tone knob in the circuit=good even if you're not using it much. |

The tone knob is REAL good. Smooths the tone out a bit. And helps with squeal, too. Bleeds off some of that uber-high-end.

![]() Experimenting with this sort of thing is fun, and really leaves me not understanding the Karl Sanders type wiring. There is such a thing as "too much" getting through in your guitar signal, I'm not sure what pot values Karl uses, but 1Meg is just too much IMO, and can make the signal too uncontrollable and trebely. Granted, I did not try the 1Meg pot with a tone knob in the circuit. As far as the Alnico 8, I can definetly tell that it's got "more" than the A5, it's a bit tighter and more defined in the low end. It's certainly subtle though, and could possibly be more apparent with a hotter winding such as with the Duncan Custom, but that experiment is for another day. |

Yeah. A5 to A8, like Scott says, isn't nearly as dramatic as ceramic to alnico.
The A8 lets you basically get ceramic performance with alnico tone. |

Any guesses what a D-activator would sound like with an A8? I'm getting those in one of the KxK's. Also, I do the Karl Sanders wiring thing. I love uber high end that makes peoples ears bleed.

i had that exact same thing happen when i took the tone knob out on my Dean EVO7--horrible feedback. the tone-out is such a tiny change that i didn't think it could be the problem, but when i added it back, feedback tamed. glad you tamed yours too.

Karl has some guitars set up with no volume pr tone knobs.
I like it that way myself, but I do that so I can put switches and such in their place. And keep in mind that a 500k is no different than a sufficiently turned-down 1M. Jeff |

so i was gonna pop my alnico 8 magnet into my duncan custom yesterday, but i couldn't get the backplate off.
i've taken the backplate off of pickups before, and it usually just slid right off. i'm sure people here have taken the backplate off of some SD's before, so was there some sort of trick to it? i took out those 4 screws on the back, peeled back the tape, but it was still on there really good (i didnt want to force it, i like that pickup, haha). after closer inspection, it looked like the pole pieces were screwed into the backplate. is this what is holding it in? /halp |
