Don't be lazy elq, things like that can easily be done in your backyard, no need to bother a luthier with that

I'd go with a wider fan though.

I'm a little sad about the loss of the Carbon Fiber option, but these options make sense. I wonder if the revised fret placement is what I think it is.

Indeed... in all seriousness, I actually wanted a a carbon fanned 6 with classical string spacing tuned in 5ths for my next Oni. But I'm sure I'll think of something else

Dan is to guitars as Masamune is to Swords. I hope Dan has time later in life to train the next generation of luthiers.

Jeez, that's a little over the top

But if we're going to head in that direction then it's 10 years of sanding scrap before even touching a guitar!

I like the blog and I'm especially looking forward to your fret placement info Dan

I met a guy at the Guild of American Luthiers convention a few weeks ago who's done the math & spreadsheets to tweak bridge, nut, and fret placement so that the small amounts of additional tension created by pressing each string down at each fret is accounted for and pitch accuracy is vastly improved over the traditional "rule of 18" method.

I'd be happy to pass along the slides from his presentation if you're interested.

I'm saddened to see that you will no longer build different scale lengths. I hope the future will allow for this option again! An 8 string with a high A and low B would be a dream.
Take care

the high A's could come back pretty quickly, but I really haven't seen a lot of demand for them.

The carbon is more complicated. I really need more special equipment for it and a 'clean room' just for that. I'm also a little reluctant because of the potential long term health effects of exposure to the resins.

The blog will extend further in a steady fashion. When I get a chance I want to put up a few techy type rants related to string tension, length and feel, something about frets etc.

I think my 8 will have a 635mm treble scale, and I'm thinking about trying high A, so there's at least a bit of latent demand

Also, if you ever decide to offer the carbon fiber option again, you'll have at least one customer.

Well spotted

That guitar is available. It started as body shape test to avoid screwing up that tasty piece of maple, then turned into an everything test. I didn't see the point of machining a test body to throw away so put a whole bunch of ideas into one instrument and have been slowly getting it done in parallel with other projects. A whole bunch of improvements to the designs and build process got tested successfully on that instrument, improvements that are now being used wherever possible on the instruments that people have been so patiently waiting for. Bit of a rant coming on here, but I can't thank guys like Eric, Chris, Daniel, Michael, Dave and others enough for bearing with me through 2010. In return I'm trying to put every improvement possible into every instrument, including a few things I was going to keep for later.

Wow Dan, I'm blown away!

In whatever the thread was where you brought up the curved fret idea you talked about stainless frets being useable for this, did you go with stainless? Or did you use regular nickel frets?

They're stainless. It honestly went more smoothly than expected, even the crowning process. My thoughts right now are that it's a slight improvement over the conventional compound scale thing, at least on the upper frets, so it might be the direction I go with things in the future.
